Had something similar, I spent a complete year in agony with slight relief from the magic happy pills that the doctors kept giving me. I eventually had a piece of the disk taken out of my back and I've not have any issues since - touch wood (touching head). I think in the UK they have some sort of replacement discs they use instead of fusing - not sure.... any doctors here.

Pretty soon they will be selling for 70K. Guess I will hold on to her until the wheels fall off.
