John, it isn't necessary to completely pull the engine with the 996 cars, even the GT3. A lot of shops, and probably dealers also, still do it though. We get 8 work hours to perform the job beginning to end.

It is a little harder to do on a GT3 than a 993 (non-AWD) with the cooler lines for the tranny. Even so, the actual time in and out complete is 6ish to 7 hours (this includes bleeding the cooling system, etc). No engine pull is required on a GT3. Very straightforward.

my dealer dropped the motor and tranny as one unit to do the rms and LWFW/Clutch. They told me that it's easier to do that way and since it was warranty work, perhaps they are able to charge Mother Porsche a few more hours...no big deal in any event.

My philosophy in dealing with cars is "WHY SCREW WITH MORE THAN YOU NEED TOO". Dropping an engine while in some cases is necessary leads to other issues that can ocur from just more complexity. Pulling a transaxle in a GT3 is FAR less work than pulling the entire engine/trans assembly.

the reason i ask is that i saw the dealer pulling out the whole engine and tranny to get the work done on a twin turbo 996. seems like a LOT of work to do the clutch.

bob, you still have 650 telephone number?
