Default Ok, so one of our 928 buddies thinks...

a supercharged 928 or 944 will toast a GT3 on the street or the track?

I had to call BS on that.....big fan of both those cars BTW.

Default How many laps - even if it is possible

Look, I love those cars too, BUT, no forced induction motor, unless very very expensive engine renovations are done, will last.

Basically, have them come to my track (mosport) and let go for 1 gas tank - about 60-70 miles (straight up no sessions). My GT3 will do this all day.
I am not at all confident that either of those cars with forced induction will last.

This is the reason I bought my car, fast fast and reliable - basically a track tool.

I am sure those cars would be fine for short hauls but still would not last.

Not quite so. My '93 RX-7, twin turbos, is still going at 137,000 miles. The turbos did begin to leak oil (fail) about 126,000, and were replaced. And this is after taking it from its stock 225 rwhp to 337 rwhp by means of intake, exhaust and ECU mods (boost increase from 10 psi 10 13.8 psi). No internal mods done.

"Some" forced induction motors may not last, but some will!

well...for one, the 928 is not as nimble as the GT3, and although potent...wouldnt stand a chance. the 944 would be close, because the 951's of their day were faster and better handling than the 911's, but i cant see one beating a GT3....it wouldnt happen

Joe- I certainly didnt mean to demean your '93 RX, and it always will have a place in my heart. Nevertheless, my point aws, whether or not if it will spank my GT3, HEAT and wear is the RX's and all forced induction "street" cars' enemy. If you go to the track, try to run the RX against your '04 GT3, it might mean you will wont finish the 60 miles in your RX, but your GT3 will love the exercise.

Basically, it will be fine for 20 minutes, but then heat and heat soak take over on track for forced induction. Of course, if the question was on absolute power and straight line performance, durability , reliability, and track worthiness are irrelevant - but that's another discussion.

Enjoy the RX.

I think the relevant issue is the addition of forced induction to a higher compression engine = low longevity, whereas the rx was made to have the turbos albeit if you crank up the boost then.....

The 944 or 928 might win, but only because it will smoke screen or oil slick its competition off the track.

The supercharged 928s are pretty fast, however given the weight difference
I would give the advantage to the GT3 unless the 928 is completely gutted out.

I own a pristine 89 928 S4 and an 05 GT3 (both white), both cars should be appreciated for
the fine machinery they are.

Bottom line....GT3 street on street tires are capable of turning lap times within a couple fo secconds of a GT3 cup. It would take a serious 928 or 944 turbo to touch a GT3, but for the right price anything can be done. As for the turbo motors making it the distance, it all depends on how the motor was built. A stock 944 with high boost will never last, even on the street. Porsche raced turbo motors for years at LeMans. What makes you think a turbo motor can't make it?

I have run my 944 turbo at 20psi on pump gas the last 2 years including track and drag racing events. No bottom end work done and putting down 334WHP at the wheels.

I was out at gingerman with a friend's 944 turbo, (Bolt on engine mods only, over 400rwhp and about $4,000 into suspension work) and we were tearing up a GT3. I mean HARD! The guy driving the GT3 was a senior instructor for a big name driving school, too. (One thing to consider, the 944 was on MP sport cups, and the GT3 was on whatever tires they come with new.)

Perhaps the driver would make some difference!
