Default New Owner -- Got a few ?'s for the guru's

I am new to the car and all of its noises, etc. I got a couple of questions for you knowledgable ones.

1. When reversing or starting in 1st, I hear a sound best described as "perk-o-lating"....wtf is that?

2. When turning slowly, such as approching a speed bump at and angle in 2nd gear, I hear a "growl" from the rear end.....sounds like I have posi-traction or a locker in the rear. WTF is that, and is it normal?

3. Are front brake cooling ducts factory installed and do they normally rub on full lock? Andrew told me that on full lock the tires "will rub the brake ducts", and it does. Just curious if this is SOP. I have not had a chance to rack the car and really look under it yet.

TIA! Tim

Tim - the noises are normal. There is a very serious Limited Slip Diff on your car and it groans in tight turns. The front springs rotate in their perches too, also on tight turns at full lock. The car has no sound deadening so you hear all the wonderful race-car noises. ain't it great?

My ducts do not rub on the tires, they hit the ground. I am told that alignment can cure the rubbing problem. On my 2 GT3's there is no rubbing but my wife and I have a track alignment with 2.5 deg of negative camber which may be why we are immune.

Best,

edited for premature send!

As I said strange sounds are standard equipment on the GT3. Kidding aside though, can you provide more info? Are we talking about starting from cold? The engine sounds quite different when cold than after it worms up, raspier sort of. The idle is rough as well, could that be what you call "coffee maker"? I've never heard that term applied to a GT3 before - adrenalin rush yes, coffe? No.

From low rpm, such as when just starting out in forward or reverse, it make a chirping sound that is similar to the percolating of a coffee maker, but obviously louder. That is the best way I can describe it. lol.

It does it hot or cold. It sounds like some sort of valve or something...hell, I dunno. lol Maybe i should go to the dealer and have the tech "investigate percolating sound from motor". haha

edit: ok, how about a bubbling chirping noise... This is low load, low rpm.....

Comes with the territory...

When I have the muffler bypass pipes on, there are no other noises.

Welcome to the club. Don't forget to bring earplugs to the track, it sounds like a jack hammer when you've got a helmet on (and just as loud too).

The noises are one of the best qualities of a GT car.

Tim,

The percolating sound may be sourced from the "air pump" that runs for about 1 minute after a cold start. If the sound you're talking about goes away after a minute or so that might be it. If it is always there when you're in first or reverse, then most likely not. The air pump system is used to help the cats warm up sooner to help with cold start emissions. Just a thought...

Thanks for the thoughts...maybe air injection...but I dont think so. I am fairly familiar with mechanics....air injection in particular (dont ask)...LOL. Well, whatver it is, if it is bad, something will break and it is under warranty for quite a while, so no biggie. I will have to pay more attention to when it does it, and see if Dereks does it too.

Thanks again...once I fiogure it out, I will let you know. Tim
