Default Mk1 GT3 short shift - part numbers?

Can anyone give me the Porsche part numbers for the short shift kit for a Mk1 GT3? And does anyone know if the installation is the same method as with the C2/boxster, or is there something special about a GT3.

Get the B&M unit at USD 200 instead, same thing as the OEM part but different color. Comes with detailed instructions. Same part for all 996 and 986. Got mine from www.2fam.com

Thanks Johannes, but I have the porsche extended warranty, so need the OEM part to keep the warranty good.

Is there even a short shift kit that works on the GT3? The only Tequipment 996 short shifter available (Part no. 000.044.700.26) comes with a disclaimer that says it doesn't work with GT3, GT2 and GT3 RS.

The short shift will work on the MkII, I think Devek has installed several. There are two parts #s, the one Viken mentioned and 996.424.983.00 which includes both the shift mechanism and the housing, shown here, I think this part eases the install.

Another possibility is the Cup car mechanism, which has many modified parts, including a stronger shift cable, closer tolerance bearings and reinforced connectors and gear lever.

Creig,

The B&M unit worked like a charm in my Mk.1. I also have extended warranty and was assured by the OPC that fitting the B&M unit would't void my warranty. My relatioship with the dealer is extremely good though.

Ciao,

Thanks Johannes - I am edging towards the B&M - it would be a hard argument for them to say that the B&M caused any damage compared to the OEM one - not that I think they would ever notice anyway.

I have the B&M unit in my MkII. That combined with the standard 15% reduction makes the shifter feel like a bolt action rifle. Its almost to short sometimes and I am actualy thinking about going back to the standard shifter while retaining the B&M bushings (read a while back it works).

Bearing in mind that GT2/3s have a shorter shift than normal 996s, does anyone know how the shift action is shortened from the factory in the GT2/3? I am assuming Porsche doesn't use the optional/B&M SSK as standard on the GT2/3 considering that people who have installed the B&M kit on their GT3s notice that the shift action is further shortened from standard.

My understanding is that the reduction is done at the tranny on the GT3. If I remember correctly, the cable connects to an arm on the tranny and if that's the case, Porsche likely just used a shorter arm. Anyone know if that arm can be swapped for the stock 996 one to undue the factory's 15% reduction? I've asked a number of people this question (including the dealer), but haven't gotten a definitive answer.

I had a B&M on my old 996 and liked the feel of it much better than the crappy plastic unit that it came with. I've been holding off on installing one in the GT3 for fear of having too much reduction in throw. This may be the answer.

Holger, thats my understanding too. The shorter shift action is on the tranny end rather than the shift lever itself. After driving my friends stock GT3 the other week, I find it the longer action much smoother. With B&M I find it not only short, but also very notchy by comparison. However, its all personal preference...

Guys,

I have both the B&M SSK unit and the Evo Motorsport ShiftLink fitted together and it is very notchy but direct and I have kind of gotten used to it. Sloth, "bolt action rifle" is an excellent description!

Hi Grieg,
Seeing your thread on th PCGB site I came over here looking for more info here you are!

After reading this thread I'm going to fit the B&M unit. Let me know if your doing the same and perhaps we can compare prices and order 2?
