Question Mk1 GT3 Club Sport roll cage removable?

Just rode on a 99 Zanzibar Red Club Sport version and it was a dream

Question for those who own one: is the rear portion of the roll cage removable? This car had the front part of the roll cage installed at factory, but it is my understanding that it normally comes with the car on a separate box and the owner decides wether or not to install this portion of the cage. I recall seeing a bunch of bolts around the B pillar, but not sure if this is for the front portion or if its also for the rear portion.

I am thinking of putting my twin boys (2 year olds, so car seat a must) back there and wanted to see if this is possible with this car.

Thanks for the replies.

Thanks Q. Do you by any chance know if the roll cage affects torsional rigidity on these cars or is it merely for protection purposes and no effect on rigidity. If memory serves me correct, the roll cage does not meet any of the pillars, merely attaches near the A pillar and the rear seats. In any case, many thanks for the reply.

Yes the cage makes a tangible difference to the rigidity, obviously not as much as a welded cage, but still tangible in its own right.

The cage bolts to:
- the floor below the A pillars
- the floor behind the B pillars
- the rear strut tower tops

some pics:

[as a side issue: I fitted a strut brace and B pillar to my 993TT - difference was STUNNING.
It now pics up a wheel on steep driveways ]

That said and done, the MK1 GT3 is built from a C4 bodyshell, so its "base rigidity" would be better than a 993 or 996 C2

is this the "RS rollcage? by porsche motorsports?"

is it availible through porsche dealers?

i understand that in terms of safety this is a better choice than the tequipment rollbar?

Is that the same as the two piece version from the MKII GT3?

Q,

I haven't seen the diagonal door entry (B pillar to floor) bars before. How are they attached to the main roll over bar? My Clubsport came with only the rear section after the 1st owner opted out from full carge and to purchase the front section separate from Porsche Motorsport is $$$$$$$$$$

Ciao,

Johannes E.

Moogle,
My cage was the rollcage supplied with the GT3 clubsport from the factory.
[....not sure what they call it ]

cosmos,
I believe it is

Mr. C4
The diagonal bar was fitted to a 1/2 sleeve on the "A pillar" bar
and the same 1/2 sleeve on the "B pillar " bar.
2 allen key bolts for each sleeve.

The Club Sport GT3 Mk1 I rode in is almost identical to Q's car(interior wise, one I rode in also had 5 pt. harness for passenger seat). As a passenger, that fire extiguisher can be a bit annoying..... The side bars are not too bad, but I did occasionally grab the A pillar while exiting the car. The interior kill switch was pretty cool, as well as the external one for the marshalls (though you have to lift the hood to see it properly).

In any case, the CS Mk1 GT3 is an incredible ride and I am doing everything possible to acquire a Zanzibar Red one. Anyone interested in a 99 BMW M Coupe (Euro Spec, 321hp)?!

Q thanks very much for the hi-res pic

after going over all these options, i think i will jsut go with the tequipment rollbar, this clubsport cage seems a bit too intrusive for everyday driving and for the purposes of safety, rigidity, 6 point harness mounting, i think the tequipment rollbar serves my purpose.

^ sorry to bug you Q, but i was wondering if you could clear up which cage that is (in those photos)...the factory GT3 with extra option? the clubsport? Aftermarket? it is a pure bolt in cage right? suitable for club/track racing?

no probs.
the cage in the photos is the factory supplied rollcage that comes with a MK1 GT3 - Clubsport.
- nothing extra

yes it is a bolt in item, as it is supplied in a bag at time of delivery

suitable for personal protection - yes.
suitable for your local club requirements ? ....cannot say

the rear section needs to be there to support the front.....

however, you could run 3 different configurations:
- rear only
- front and rear [ no side bars ]
- front and rear with side bars
