How many GT2s sold in US ?

Initially was supposed to be an 02-03 run of approx 160 cars, modern day Porsche could care less about production numbers, the car is still being built in 04 and 05.

I was told by a friend at Porsche in Atlanta that there were 64 cars in 2002 101 in 2003 and 14 (through July) which may have grown to as many as 20 for 2004. I have read in several car mags lately that there will be 2005 GT2's and I have inquired with several dealer and now directly with Porsche and have been told, no 2005 GT2's, just what is left in dealer inventory and then no more. A few 2003's and 7-2004's, but no midnight blue one's which is what I wanted to order.

In the fullness of time it will make this beloved beasty a very rare car indeed. I wonder if with such low volume sales they'll make another (997) one? Maybe the GT3 will become their only stripped down light weight special.

I am sure that PAG will come up with something which will continue the GT-2 tradition. If PAG don't the major tuners in Germany and Switzerland will.
Mind you the TT Boxster never caught on
Almost every 911 series with a Turbo in its line up had its specials. More notable of modern times being the 964 Turbo S and Turbo 3.6 S, the 993 GT-2 and GT-2 Evo and of course the 996 based GT-2.
Might take a while but there has always been something special around.

Thanks to everybody it's very interesting that there were less than 200 Gt2s imported. With that low of sales numbers I wonder if it would be worthwhile to ever develop a new one. Seems to be a case for prices to firm, time will tell. carl

Dear Carl,
The GT-2 was quite a good seller in the rest of the world. The Japanese loved em. They sold well in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France etc. I have no idea why the GT-2 sold in such low numbers in the USA. I am certainly hoping for a 997 GT-2 style car and I sure it will come.

PS: Second hand GT-2s do not sell well anywhere. They were snapped up new (that is all that PAG is interested in) but the second hand market has tanked here in Switzerland for second hand GT-2s and GT-3s.

Adrian,
Porsche North America actually made the decisions to restrict the total number of cars to come here. They knew they could sell 200 cars, but probably would not be able to sell 500 cars. So they restricted the flow, made the "excluxive" and raised the price. As a result the profit they made were still about the same as if they brought in more cars.
Seems we Americans just love "limited" or "special" runs and Porsche keeps em coming!

Dear Carl,
No car really ever holds its value. Some people claim that when fully depreciated some cars hold their value. However, when you add up what you have put into it whilst you have owned it, you rarely if ever win. Porsches are no different to this. I have never bought one new so I do not know the personal impact from this position on resale.
