Default Any issues or hints for first DIY oil change on GT3?

Hello guys,

I'm doing an oil change on friends (MJSPEED) GT3 next weekend and wanted to ask whether there are anything "special" I need to be aware of?

I'm very familiar with the older cars (as my 993) but never done an oil change on these water pumpers (no pun intended).
I know normal 996 has only one filter and it is one of these "can" filters where you only change the inside filter, not the whole thing and that on 996 changing the filter is 10 times simpler than what it is on 993, 964 engines.
Since the GT3 uses same older crankcase is the filter system the same or not? And if not where/what kind is the filer in GT3?

Sorry for asking (probably) very "rookie" questions but since I've never been under GT3 yet and it's a friends car I just want to be prepared and most importanly, have the right tools (if any special tools are needed).

Thanks!

Hey Finn, Take a look over at www.renntech.org . Loren has a DIY for the oil change showing all the part numbers. From what I understand, it is pretty self explanatory.

Thanks Sloth, that DIY explains everything but are you sure GT3 is that same as 996 since the crankcaases are different?

FF,

According to the mechanic you gave me to call the oil filter is the same as in the GT2 and Turbo and that there's only one. I will verify this.

Not the same as the standard 996 Carrera engine. There should be a specific one for a Turbo/GT2/GT3. Try this link...

http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...code=diy_oc_tt

Parts you will need:
1 ea 996 107 225 52 Oil Filter (with large O-ring)
1 ea 999 707 465 40 Small O-ring
1 ea 900 123 010 20 Copper Sealing Ring - Oil Tank
1 ea 900 123 118 30 Aluminum Sealing Ring - Engine
9 ea 996 106 665 55 Mobil 1 0W-40 or equal (approx. 8.5 liters (MY04 GT3 9.0 liters))

I have. Just make sure you remove the filter while draining the oil from the sump and crankcase, and let it drain for 20-30 minutes to get it all out. Have a rag handy when you remove the filter case, it's impossible to remove the old filter without dripping oil. Remember to use a counter-wrench when loosening or tightening the sump plug, as it's aluminum and easy to tweek if you don't.

One more thing you might do is to remove the air intake tubing and check for oil. Some cars seem to get a small amount of what probably is blow-by oil into the intake through what must be a small breather tube on the top of the larger intake tube. I don't think a small amount of oil is an issue, anybody have an opinion on this?, but it is nice to know if there is any.

The renntech page is very good. I did it after about 2000miles- found 0-40 Mobil One at Autozone, only place in Des Moines that had it. Changing is a piece of cake compared to the 993 I used to have. That took all day getting to both filters, etc!! The filter cartridge is EASY to change compared to the old days... I'll be ready to do it a again here pretty soon. 5400 miles and loving it!!

I used Lorens DYI write up and changed mine at 2400 miles...no problems other than the fact my drain pan had too small of a hole in the catch pan...no trouble in accepting the crank case volume of oil...The oil tank was another matter...The volume and speed the oil pours out overwhelmed the catch pan and overflowed...quite a mess. Next time I will use a wash bucket and transfer the oil to another container...no more overflow problems. I raised my car on 4 jack stands...if you don't use a lift, you need to put it up on 4 so that the car is level and all the oil drains from the crankcase..fyi

Thanks Sloth (& others), somehow I missed the GT2/3 link (doh...), Loren's DIY is self explanatory and since it is as simple as it is, can't see any problems. My god, even the filter is in the engine compartment!
(just did oil change on my 993 and those who've done it know it's "sliiightly" more challenging).

Thanks again guys!

Marcelo,

Remember to get that filter housing wrench, since I'm not sure if mine fits. And also turkey paster or something for sucking the extra oil won't hurt.

Gioel,

Once I get back from Europe (in a month, I'm leaving next week) we can do it but it won't happen with only ham & eggs, main ingredient (beer) is missing...
Send me an PM or e-mail and remind me about it while I'm gone (send it, say, four weeks from now).

FF,

You can't make the demands...I'm the agent here so if G-money wants his oiled changed he needs to come to me and I make the demands which of course you will get, minus a small percentage (a couple of Newcastles for me).

Gioel,

PM me and let's negotiate... But keep this in mind starting price is a 12-pack of whatever Mr. Finn wants to drink ...
