For those who think GT3 prices are dropping!

GT cars should hold their value the best of all Porsches, and GT3 prices should only fall appreciably if/when the 997 GT3 is announced for NA. For those of you who lease cars, it will make very little difference whether the car is new or used since you are paying for the depreciation from the purchase price. Also, if you wait, the prime interest rate will rise while waiting, and thus your GT3 will cost you more than today.

doody: Regarding MSRP vs. used pricing - options on a car are worth a small fraction of their initial cost when it comes to trade-in value so would they really do much to increase used prices?

options are surely non-obvious when you're doing trade maths. i was simply pointing out that GT3s cost less than TTs no matter how you slice it, so the depreciation cost as a percentage is higher (more kilobucks).

Options do have an impact on the sale of a used car. I agree that the dollar value of the options may not come out as high as the seller wants but the car sells. Even with the GT3 Model, some folks looking for a used one will want non performance options. Heck, we have seen it here with buyers discussing their orders on this forum.

GT3 prices will continue to drop, at close to 100k they are too higher for certain people to keep in their collection when they're itching for the next best thing. Plus, there were too many made to be consider very rare, unlike the Gt2's. I'm not saying they will drop to below 50k but I wouldn't be suprise if they settle between 50-60k in a few years. You can get older 996 for close to 30k these days and more recent models around the 50k mark. Porsche over produced the 996 and even though the GT3 is a better car, there is no way it will sustain a 100& premium to a regular 996. Even 01 TT's are around 80k already.
One very important factor is that the new 997 is coming and I assure you a Porsche will release a performance version soon after, guys who can afford to buy the current GT3 new will trade in for those cars and guys who can't afford the current GT3 will not pay the near 100k price down the road.
yeah, I heard it all about how you're going to keep it forever, fine, but you can't deny the market forces ar work, plus there is a ton of alternatives in the 90-100k price range...

i really don't understand the talk about depreciation, and i am a banker.
i bought my new, i log 20,000 miles per year per porsche, driven ONLY on weekends and DE's. so with that mileage, i expect my car to worth about nothing when i am done.
yes, most GT3 will not be driven as much as mine and they will still drop in price say to $80 in 3-4 years. my cost 110k. so the question is are YOU willing to spend $30k more and enjoy the car three years earlier? i do... who know, i may die tomorow!

Mooty.
I agree 100%. If it costs $30,000 to drive for 3 years, the person who buys the used one for 80K may get only 50K after 3 more years. The cost of driving is still approx. $30,000. (non-GT cars will fall much more than 30K in 3 years).
To quote that wise American philosopher, Bon Jovi, "... gotta live while I'm alive..."

MarkPCar: You picked amazing dates to reference those RS prices in Pano. I had done the Fall '86 PCA Treffen trip to Germany and after getting to ride in a 935 on the track at Weissach and seeing all the RSes that people at the factory were driving I decided I really needed one for the track. I asked what one cost and was told that they were selling for about $10K in Germany. Seeing as I'd paid about that for my 911T in '85 I thought that was a helluva deal. I was greatly disappointed to see prices were much higher in Pano when I got home.
mooty: Great attitude. My Boxster S took over a $30K depreciation hit in 2 years but they were 2 fun years. And the only reason I took the hit was so I could buy the GT3 so I consider it a financial sacrifice to a worthwhile cause. Personally I plan on holding on to my GT3 for 30+ years so I can see how their prices then compares to when new.

My take...
with the GT3 due in 2 months, I really dont care what the car is going to be worth in 2-3 years...Thats about the longest I will own is as I will be moving on to another location where I cant bring the GT3..but all I do know..I will be rivalling Mooty in terms of mileage..the GT3 will be my track car, weekend car and also my "creatures of the night" mobile...
I think the GT3 will be like the RS back home...its a car that porsche built to be driven...it has almost 80 thousand kms and still racking it up as and when I am home. The joy of getting strapped in, revving up the 3.8, listening to it sing, slotting it into gear..feeling the rush, discovering the limits of what "grip"+"aero" is at speed..how can one have time to think about deperciation...haha
I know I will be driving all I can, 8000rpm at a time..
