gt3 finally arrived
Well my car has finally arrived-almost. My car was ordered last October through a dealer friend. It was told to me that it was to be an April build and May delivery, so that info was pretty accurate. The serial number is 2642. This car was ordered by the dealer for himself but when I expressed interest I took over the car. The car is midnight blue with natural brown full leather, xenon lights, cruise control, ceramic brakes, thicker steering wheel and storage compartment lid with GT3 logo. At the time I took the order over I should have paid more attention to the options but I was so thrilled to be able to buy one that I left the options on. If I recall ,last October the cars really were not on E-Bay yet and were in short supply. In looking back I should have left off the cruise control, storage lid logo and full leather package and saved myself about $5000. I have read all the threads about the ceramic brakes but I wanted to try them-I guess I might be converting later! The full leather package led to another problem in that I wanted the euro seats but they are more expensive and have to be specially ordered with that leather. Some interesting facts-the base car was invoiced by the factory to the dealer at $87,287 and the total cost including shipping and gas guzzler tax was $103,171. My cost (and MSRP) was $116,020 so if you ever wondered what the dealer makes on the cars that is the answer. The last two parts of this story are-I still have to get the car from Pennsylvania to Chicago and the dealer is in the process of adjusting and checking the suspension. I am assuming that if they use the factory specs for the adjustment the car will be ok. This is a question for Bill from Chicago-who did you use to adjust and set up your car? (in case I need a backup!)
For the local DE events at Blackhawk and Gingerman I have been driving a stock 1973 RS lightweight and a 1974 RS Carrera 3.0. These cars have just the right balance of power and weight so it will be interesting to see the comparison. If only my driving skills could equal the potential of the cars!!
This forum has and continues to be a wonderful source of information and entertainment-keep up the good work.

Thanks for the dealer cost figure, not that any of us can use it as a negoitation tool.
The figure I dont understand is the $103,171. It appears high. The reason is because the difference between that figure and what you paid($116,000) is roughly the same as the markup from the base model to the base MSRP of $99,900. In other words, the options appear to be at full retail in the 103 total cost figure.
Perhaps there is little if any markup on Porsche options.

Joe;
I am trying to work through the dealer profit margin. If the dealer base "cost" is $87,287 and the "base" MSRP of $99,900 then he makes $12,613 on the base "plus" the markup on the options. Given the same percentage profit margin of 12.6% (12,613 / 99,900), then he makes an additional $2,031 on the options of your car for a total of $14,644. The $2,031 is .126 x $16,120 (the difference between base $99,900 and including options of $116,020. The 12.6% profit margin for Porsche sounds about right. Am I missing something?

Joe - I got my car on Sunday from a dealer in Florida, and so far I know the swaybars were not set right, but the camber is right at spec. I have not measured the toe or caster to see if it is right yet. Been pretty busy with work, since the car arrived. I would recommend Midwest Eurosport or Perfect Power for re-aligning or checking the alignment.

I agree with your logic of the 103,171 vs. the 116,000 in that the $12,829 profit margin is the same between base cost (87K) and base MSRP (99.9K), however, there has to be at least a 12-13% profit margin for the dealers in the "options". I suspect that the profit margins on the options would be "higher" than the margins on the base car.

As I recall back when Edmunds listed dealer prices for Porsche most options had a margin under 10%. I think Litronics ordered on a Boxster for example listed for $1200 something and cost $1100 something. Not to say it hasn't changed though as the $115 Porsche carpets seem to be a big option for some dealers.

Margin on Options
If Porsche (PCNA) is like most other US manufacturer's /wholesalers, the option mark up is significantly less than the base markup. Options typically carry no more than 5 to 7% and often less. That is why total markup an a high option car is not at the 12.6% number.
Also, destination and gas guzzler are straight pass throughs, so negotiating them as part of the total deal may give at least some satisfaction in terms of a "discount". Of course there's always the $349 "processing fee" to work on.

I am getting the following figures from the Porsche invoice to the dealer-base gt3-87,287,Xenon lights-927,cruise control-485, Porsche black mats-98,ceramic brakes-6928,thicker steering wheel-574,storage compartment with logo-225,midnight blue color-701,natural leather brown-3766,destination charge-765,edcscomputer service charge-200 and gas guzzler charge-1300 and finally a credit of 85 for "preparation credit". This all totals to $103,171 which I assume is the real dealer cost. One interesting fact that I learned is that the dealer has to pay the company for the car as soon as it hits the port of entry (Baltimore in this case). It doesn't matter if the car was a special order (in this case) or just additions to inventory.Since I know nothing about dealer economics maybe this is the way all dealers function. In any case the total I was billed for was MSRP of 116,020 plus freight of 765 for a grand total of 116785 plus 100 in misc. charges. I don't have a copy of the window sticker yet so I don't know the individual prices of the options and how much the dealer makes on each one. Message to Bill from Chicago-I was at BlackHawk DE earlier this year but not RA. I will have the GT3 at July DE at Blackhawk. Thanks for the note about Perfect Power-I have used them before.

First off, Congrats Joe.
That is some great inside info.
I want to welcome you to Rennlist.
I was also wondering if it would be possible for you to space your sentences and use paragraphes. The way you type now, makes it very difficult to read.
Thank you,
And again Welcome and congratulations on your new GT3.

Joe, I have a RUF restored '73rs lightweight, as well as the GT3. They are both JUST PERFECT...in their own ways. The RS is more fun to drive; the GT3 is (obviously) MUCH faster, and a far, far 'better' car....The GT3 really is the modern RS. Enjoy!
