Not laughing, but these engines are pretty robust. I put 143K miles on mine before I needed to refresh the valve guides. I've done nothing to the cylinders and bottom end.

Yes, an engine can fail, but the GT3 engine is much, much more robust than the Carrera engine in the standard 996. The two engines are completely different.

Also, any car will have mechanical problems over time. If your budget is so tight that you do not have a "slush fund" in the bank to cover the unexpected, then your reach may be exceeding your grasp. Nothing worse than pouring all your money into a new toy and be forced to divest it because of a major expense.

Others may suggest an insurance policy. They are out there, but actuaries are pretty smart about making money out of your monthly payments. It almost aways better to have cash in the bank to get you over the bumps.

Lastly, there are some things you should routinely address with the GT3. One bit one is getting the coolant lines welded or pinned. There are not many weaknesses with the GT3 or Turbo models, but that is one of them.

As far as I know, the best warranty which is Fidelity, does not write the 997 GT3, so I would assume they don't write the 996 GT3 either. Actually I don't think they write any of the GT3's.

As mentioned above, these are very solid engines. Also, I would not want to put a cheap warranty on one as they're likely to try and get out of any claim.

Best thing to do is put whatever you consider that "cheap" amount of money, into a high yield savings or an index fund.
