Great show of left foot braking techniques. I wonder what the life expectancy of a spectator at a pro-rally is?

In the 1980's, Walter Rohrl was the KING of Rally racing. He was one of the first drivers to benefit from Audi's quattro technology, an unfair advantage over standard two wheel drive cars on wet and loose surfaces. I know he is a test driver for Porsche now, but I wonder how his incredible road racing skills translate on the track, compared to track-oriented race drivers...?

Walter is incredible. His car control was and is truly beyond human. That is the footage that got me hooked on rallying at the age of 6.
Interesting that Audi has him on their site. He used to do test driving work for up until the mid 90's. He was working on the Audi TT project, and he came to find the car had a rather dangerous tendancy to snap oversteer at high speeds. He reported this to the engineers, but they took no action.
Disgusted, Walter quit his job because the engineers didn't listen to him.
Soon after the TT came out, there were several accidents in Europe. They were caused by the "style over function" aerodynamic characteristics of the car which actually created lift at high speed rather than downforce. Thats why all TTs sold today have a small spoiler on th trunk lid.
Anyway, Walter is a true driver's driver. And as many of you know he is the chief test driver for the 993 chassis cars up to the incredible Carrera GT.
By the way, his track skills certainly are up to par- remember the SCCA Trans AM / IMSO GTO days of 1987 and 1988? He routinely beat not only all the other competition, but his two venerable teammates, Hans Stuck and Hurley Haywood...

i have the full-length video from that short film. it was portugal 1986. the quattro group-b (killer bees) were making in excess of 750 hp then. you should note that the shifter in that car was an early sequential type (no gates).
another must see video in the vein of this one is alain boisnard's "lap of the gods." f1, mainly from the turbo era. there is a breathtaking sequence of patrick depallier's footwork and driving technique while lapping monaco in the six-wheeled tyrrell...they removed the front cowl and mounted the camera on the roll-over hoop to capture this.
