Default Shifter issues and questions

Plastic parts broke on my shifter yesterday at the track. Was able to drive home, just really sloppy. Tore into it and this is what I found.

A couple questions. Should I just do the Function First upgrade kit and be done with it? Or go for a full Numeric set up with new cables? Or something in between? It's mostly a car I daily and gets track time maybe 4-6 times a year. So don't need a full cup experience. One other question is the shifter. as you see, it is bent. I assume that is normal? Thanks in advance.

If you have the extra money to spend, I would clean house and go the Numeric set up with the cables. The cables will eventually be a weak link anyway.

However, that's just me. Let's see what others might advise.

Go with function first. It will immediately solve your issue and you can upgrade cables later as you see fit. The FF set up is brilliant, I run it in my cup car and it’s very very slick. Much better than the cup shifter which develops play in fairly short order.

I agree on ff, and cables later. I had zero complaints from my f1 kit on my former 6-3 (except it seemed pricey for what you get). Joe, even better, buy a standard 997 shifter on eBay and use that as your base to upgrade. They are super cheap and have a slightly shorter throw that feels absolutely magic with the function first kit. Don’t get the factory short shifter though. They are too short and notchy when paired with a gt gearbox!

Like this one? Looks identical. What's the difference?

It’s a tad shorter and has some beefed up internals parts that eliminate flex and skip. For example, see the metal plate on the left side of the white plastic piece where the shift rod attaches to the pivot part.

Great. I ordered the Ebay one and the rebuild kit. Should make me at least a second faster at the track.
