Default Saving money on thrust bearings for your shocks

Hi All,

The following are for the 2.25" shocks - as opposed to the 60mm shocks.

Adding a thrust bearing to the top of the shock mount will help eliminate the various clunking and other noises as you turn the wheel. The clunking is due to friction causing a skipping between the spring and the spring spring retainer.

Above are the part numbers - the bearing cost ~ $10.00 each, and the thrust washers are pretty cheap as well. For the front, you will need 2 bearings - one per side, and 2 washers per side. Just sandwich the thrust bearing with the washers on each side

Cheap fix...

Interesting. My Motons have those, and I just cleaned up and re-greased them. They are not at the top perch though, they are between the main and tender springs. Think it matters?

Very cool.

My worry is dirt getting into the roller bearings. How long have you been using them?

3 years or so, easy enough to clean, everything is still in good shape - just cleaned them again. I installed them just under the top 'holder' for the spring. There is some dirt there, but not as much as you would think!

Works just fine for me!

BTW, the downside of using grease in this type of application, is that grease will attract dirt - or al least retain it. A very light grease or perhaps something like a way oil or even something like engine assembly lube works better,
