6GT3 4.0 conversion – Mahle piston/cylinder alternative?
All,
We are doing an engine conversion on my 996.1GT3. Going from 3.6 to 4.0 litres. Doing this with the 4.0 Crank, Carrillo rods, and a 3.8 Mahle piston and cylinder set.
My question is in relation to the Mahle 3.8 piston and cylinder set. The price of these has recently jumped up a lot. Has anyone done this conversion using altermnate piston & cylinders such as Carrillo etc? Or knows other companies that supply this or another option?
Many thanks,
BJ

Stick with Mahle, they may appear expensive now, but they’ll look cheap compared with the other alternatives when they fail and you end up pulling the motor and rebuilding it.

you mean like the oem porsche lifter that lasted 1000 miles on my 25k$ 1000 hp build before it failed and was sucked thru the motor? if i had used the mahle nikasil lined setup i would have had to buy 3 new cylinders worth of parts. with the steel liners a simple hone was all that was needed.

No,I mean the piston that failed to retain its top ring & required a full strip / rebuild to get rid of the aluminium swarf that was in every part of the engine. I could have just replace the piston & its rings but had lost faith in the quality of the Capricorn product by then. It lasted for 41K miles

All, thanks for your replies/info. Seems like the recommendation is to stick with Mahle as they are quality.
As an fyi I got an answer back from carrillo, they don't do pistons & cylinders for a 996 but they suggested www.lnengineering.com

silly rabbit motorsport sells la sleeves and cp pistons and rings for the mezger engine. 3.6 or 3.8 your choice. evoms has since moved from darton sleeves to la sleeves and they use cp pistons
lne typically has a long backorder on their parts since they supply flat 6 innovations with all their engine parts aka jake raby

You may want to ask your engine builder which supplier for pistons and liners he is prepared to use in your build, as ultimately he'll be staking his name and reputation on the built end product.
