In the Internet age where the latest and greatest is perceived to be the coolest, it’s refreshing to read content like this. Unfortunately the GT3 has been watered down to appeal to the masses and is now a bit of a sell out. Makes the old ones all the more special.

How much difference do the lowered seats make? There must be 3-4 in diff between sport backs and buckets.

The seminal (and in my humble opinion) finest iteration of the GT3.
I’ve just bought my fifth example of a Mk1 996 GT3, so maybe I’m a tad biased in my appraisal ...
The most analogue GT3, and the closest to its Cup car brethren as the GT3 ever came.
I’m not sure how many miles the factory car has covered, but a fresh set of dampers (or if funds are tight ...) refurb the originals, and the ride quality will be vastly improved.
Fitment of a 997 shifter assembly will remove 18 years of wear/slop and bring the shift quality bang up to date.
The spring rates are considerably softer than the Mk2 version you guys got in The States, and this allied to a body shell that’s not quite as stiff torsionally and flexurally as the 2003 version, makes for a nicer, better riding, more feelsome road car.
And whilst the Mk1 engine doesn’t have quite the top end punch of the Mk2, it has a more characterful nature and power delivery, the earlier engine has an extremely rough tickover, so much that when hot, the engine gently and rhythmically rocks the whole car, let’s call it character. The earlier engine’s power delivery is far from smooth, and its note changes with every opening of the resonance chambers in the inlet manifold and the various stages of the variocam variable timing actuation, this too adds to the engine’s and the car’s inimitable character.
The wheels may look a tad fussy these days, but they’re surprisingly light and suit the car perfectly. That deep front bumper is a thing of beauty, but pales into insignificance when compared to the stunningingly organic work of art that is the Mk1 rear spoiler.
This car is Porsche at it finest, the perfect blend of aircooled and watercooled DNA, so much so that I liken the Mk1 to a 964 RS with 360hp, such is the compact and intimate nature of the cabin, but also the car’s footprint is tiny too, especially when compared with that of the 991.
Do I love them ?? You betcha
