Shifter Broke - Stuck in 1st Gear
Pulled into my garage and the shifter stopped working. It's locked side-to-side and just flops forward and back (no resistance).
I am assuming it is the cables.
If it is the cables, how much of a job is it to fix?
What's the better cable to get?
Unfortunately, I can't roll it out, but at least the tail is pointing out.

you should be able to crawl under it pretty easily and move the levers to get it into neutral. You either lost one of the cables from the bottom of the shifter or off of the lever on the transmission.
There were some good and bad feedback on the numeric cables but I think they've addressed the quality issue they had early on, I installed a set on my car last year and have had zero issues with them other than they make a slight noise that I was fully expecting. I did NOT try any of the insulation techniques to mute the noise...my exhaust is 105db so it's not really a concern for me.
I DIY'd the install as I do most everything myself and honestly it was MUCH more of a pain in the rear than I expected it to be. I'd rather pull the motor back out than do the shifter cables again. Not a fun job, your fingers will hurt for days.

Cable on right side dropped off the ball end of the shifter.
I was able to snap it back on, so it works now, but I am thinking that it's telling me that it is time for new cables.

Numeric has good install docs that I followed.
My issue was with the rubber plug that the cables pass through that needs to be removed and then re-inserted in the tub of the car. Even with lube it's less than fun.

I think I just upgraded to the 997 SCU. I’ll dig for a post on that, but it cured the problem and I haven’t had any issues for years.
Side note - mine crapped out in 3rd gear at the track. I ran a couple session with only one gear. Ha! A lot of rev limiter...

Arguably the worst DIY to do on jack stands, an absolute b!tch to get the rubber grommet out without dropping the transmission, you have to attack it from inside.
Ive had standard cables and 997.2GT3 shifter, numeric cables and numeric shifter and now CAE cables and CAE shifter. I won’t be swapping out the CAE anytime soon.

I didn't notice any sound- just the beauty in precise shifting - Almost felt gated. Not much drive time yet with them on BRM transmission and all. My car basically track- but drive it on street to get it there.

The Function First kit looks interesting, but I have to wonder how much that plastic cage flexes and how much that contributes to shifter slop?
Also, does the stock GT3 shifter have a reduced throw compared to the standard 996?

Cup Car cables are EOL and no longer available from Porsche. Occasionally you will see a set come up for sale. Numeric is the next best thing and very close to what the Cup cables where.
