Roll Bar for the 996/GT2/3 Mk2 (Mildly redundant)

Roll Bar for the 996/GT2/3 Mk2

I am not hopeful that I will receive a positive response to this more focused post. But I have to give it a try.

Being 6'2", I appreciate leg room in my GT3/Mk2, and drive with the stock seat in the fully extended position on the street. In the past, I have had BBI and Tequipment bars. Both restricted rearward travel of the stock GT3 seat, the Tequipment more so than the BBI. Both bars have gone in and subsequently come out of the car. I have identified three (3) other bolt in bars, with all three (3) attaching their rearward portion to the rear upper strut mount, a good thing I feel. GMG and DASsport claim they do not restrict rearward travel of the stock seat, Cantrell is not so specific, only saying that the stock seat can be used with their respective bars.

My question, anyone installed a GMG, DASsport or Cantrell bar into a 996 or 996 GT2/3 Mk2 and have been able to fully extend the stock seats rearward? Any shared experience will be appreciated.

the d/s seat belt mount which is were the bottom of the bar front hoop mounts is were the seat hits almost impossible to avoid it. the gmg harness bar is the closest to full backward movement you will find save a weld in unit

Good advice here...

I know exactly what you are speaking of. GMG states that their bar does not interfere with seat travel. I hope they are being 100% candid! Thanks for the input!!!!

i would say my seats have hit the bar when set all the way back. my friend is much taller than me im 5'10 and he is over 6ft. he uses the harness bar and seems to work for him.

Which bar?

I have MaxSpeed seats and GMG bar and at max slide, still have 1-inch clearance to the bar. I'm almost 6-2, 200lb, and I have the seat in the mid position when I use harness, for relax driving 3/4 distance. Never all the way back. The GMG bar is curved behind the seats which adds 1.5 inches of additional travel. See pictures with seat all the way back.
Tip: don't use bolts but all-thread bolts when installing roll bar. The GMG set is very rigid and require muscle. Also require to collapse/ remove bump under carpet near attachment on floor by the B pillar.

Good info, not real keen about "....collapse/ remove bump under carpet near attachment on floor by the B pillar." That bump must be there for a reason.

Martin
the bump but the B pillar and seat belt bolt was made of cardboard in the 2004, and plastic in 2005. Serves no real purpose.
If you pull back the carpet, you can remove but I think you have to remove quite a bit of carpet to get it out.

tgavem 12-09-2017 06:23 PM

It's the first 2 inches from the attachment that touches the carpet and bulge. Very close too the floorboard. If you use the all thread bolt method, you should be able to compress this section as you thighten the nut. If you use the bolt that comes with the harness bar, you won't be able to get bolt in wo cross threading bolt or collapsing the piece behind the bar. Hope this help.

I have the das sport in my 6GT3. I am 6 foot and its so close to being too tight of a fit. But its nice thats its a complete bolt in bar. I can take pictures as well if its needed. I know Titan Motorsports in conjunction with one of the guys at First car choice in Orlando, Fl make a bolt in that has more seat clearance then others.

Not exactly your requirements above but I'll share my experience as a data point for you at least.

I have a 996TT, am also 6'2" and had the Tequipment bar first and now the GMG bar with both stock seats and GT2 seats.

The GMG bar allows full travel of the seat on the stock rails. With either set of seats though you will get a little rubbing at the base of the seat, right below the break where it folds forward. I run my GT2 seats 1 notch forward of full travel just to preserve the CF but if that is not a concern for you you can run them all the way rearward with the GMG bar.

This is the specific bar I have https://shop.gmgracing.com/collections/all/products/996-gmg-wc-harness-rollbar Also not really relevant but included for completeness I have the reinforcement bar as well as seen here http://www.bulletproofautomotive.com...ement-brancing
