Default Cup Steering Wheel Question

What's the weight savings of going to the factory cup wheel over the standard airbag wheel in the car? ....taking into consideration the hub / adapter that's needed as well.

There's a million threads on this wheel but I can't seem to find anywhere what the weight savings, if any, is over the factory wheel.

I've got the factory alcantara RS wheel in my car but it's starting to get wear on it so I'm considering 1) taking it out and preserving it and justifying doing so by hopefully saving a couple of lbs in the process or 2) just re-wrapping the current factory wheel and continuing with what I've got.

Any input is appreciated.

I can't remember exactly, but it's something like 3lb+ lighter. The airbag is heavy & so is the wheel. The Cup (aka Momo Model 7) wheel plus boss weighs less than 2 lbs & it's very noticeable; it really changes the feedback through the wheel for the better imo. You just need to wire a 2.8 ohm resistor across the airbag plug & you're good to go with no airbag warning light. I took all my airbags out & they weigh a ton!

I leave it alone if you don't do lotta trackdays. Feedback is amazing on the track but if not lotta trackdays- not worth it imo. Mike

It's definitely more than 3lbs. I'd say closer to 7-8lbs lighter.

Its much lighter, and I agree that it transformed the steering feel for me. I'm happy with the swap.

Hey Andy. I'm using the 320mm 997Cup wheel with a Cup quick disconnect and a Rothsport hub. This set up weights 3 lbs 6 oz. The 350 996Cup wheel is about 4 oz heavier. The stock OEM Porsche wheel weighs right under 10 lbs which makes the weight savings a little over 6.5 lbs for the 997Cup package. This allows me to retain a horn and Motec controls with a disconnect steering wheel without using an external curly cord. Hope that helps..

I can weigh anything you might be interested in for the cup wheels. I have in stock the 997 and 991's.

The 996 are available too in stock.

We sell the Sparco adapter. The sparco is nice because it has two sets of threaded holes, so it adapts to just about any wheel.

Thanks

Ed

Definitely one of the best interior modifications you can do.

As others have said, it’s a significant weight saving which results in an amazing increase in steering feel. The slightly thinner handle on the wheel feels a little strange at first but you get used to it very quickly. With the amount of tracking you seem to do you definitely won’t regret it! I personally prefer the 996 wheel to the 997 or 991. It’s more period correct for the interior IMO.

The 996 Cup steering wheel with 15mm spacer is 1,774 Kg = 3.9 lbs
The 996 3-spoke steering whee with airbag (without clock spring) is 3,252 Kg = 7,15 lbs

Saving is 3.25 lbs + the weight of the clock spring.

Echoing much of the above - the cup wheels make a HUGE improvement in 'feel' - they transmit everything, very tactile on track.

Some random observations, and one question.

1. I have the 996 cup wheel - it really does look right in a 996, and not too expensive. Gert hooked me up. The later flat bottomed versions I am sure function fine, just a question of aesthetic preference.

2. I am not the only one that has an issue with the horn function - it works, but only when the telescoping steering collumn is carefully set in a 'certain' position - kind of annoying, I have to set it so that it works on the street. At the track, I forego the horn. Obviously a contact/ground issue, but as I mentioned, I am not the only one with this issue that has stumped competent race techs.

3. I am curious about Powdrhound's 997 version w/ quick disconnect, not requiring tethering. Is this functionality (maintaining horn) only possible with a 997 version wheel, or can it work with a 996 cup wheel too? If the 996 cup version requires the coiled connector wire, that's not something that would work for me.

Cheers

Matt

I'm using the 997Cup/RSR quick disconnect with the optional internal multi pin connector. There are 21 pin inputs in the connector. The is no external coiled cord. There is a small amount of coiled cord hidden internally in the cavity of the steering wheel hub, effectively functioning like the clock spring. I have the two buttons on the 997Cup wheel wired to the horn and two external buttons mounted on a CF backing plate to operate the various modes of the Motec display. Being able to disconnect the steering wheel and take it home with you also makes a nice theft deterrent.

I personally prefer the smaller 320mm 997Cup wheels as they make steering inputs quicker and more precise than the larger 350mm 996Cup wheel. The smaller wheel has definitely improved my driving. I also like the fact that the 997 (and 991) Cup wheel rim is thicker than the 996 versions which just feels too skinny in my hands. It all comes down to preference I guess....
