Wounded
I found this horrific stone chip at the top of the front hood after a drive down one of our highways.
Didn't hear it, didn't see it until I got to where I was going.
Sucker left a significant dent into the hood.
The question is, what questions should I ask when I start going for estimates?
The last thing I want is a bunch of bondo in the hole.
What's the best method to get this fixed? I haven't had to deal with metal repair for quite a long time, so I would expect techniques to be quite different these days and I need to be educated.
Thanks!

Oooouch. If you make a claim, it's comprehensive since the stone was moving. FYI. Not collision.
PDR would be ideal, if the outcome is good. Touch up paint. Polish the hood. Rewax.

This is why I have zero deductible for comprehensive. I lose two windshields a year. Depending on your deductible I would either PDR and touch up or take it to a really good shop that will basically PDR except they will repaint the hood.

It doesn't appear form the pic that there is a penetration. Even if, a good body man can MIG that and you'd never know if both sides get refinished. The cost might exceed the cost of a hood, but if there in a VIN number on the hood you'd want to keep that. I don't recall if there is or not.

Nah, I meant the VIN. I was just ignorant about whether it had the VIN like some of the other body panels. Now I know, thanks. Guess I have no reason not to go CF now! (except the cost)

The hood is also autographed by Derek Bell on the inside. At least that signature is about 12" to 15" from the impact.
I don't want anyone messing with that.

Almost looks like a bullet re-entered from orbit. I've seen this on metal roofs where gun play was a regular occurance. Sometimes they cause a leak. FMJ bullets are hard to stop.
Paintless dent removal is an option but it's going to need paint. Blending is an option but red isn't easy.
Good luck.

When the rain stops I'll take it out to a few shops and see what they recommend.
I probably will opt for a repaint since it tends to draw attention to itself.

That’s a pretty big, deep dent. Even if you were winding your engine up a bit on the highway you would have still heard that happen. Do you think someone may have done that when your car was parked somewhere?
The hood is made of aluminum and that dent will have stretched the metal some, prying out the dent will stretch the metal more. Steel can be shrunk back into place, but aluminum is a lot harder to work with. My dad used to smooth out aluminum dents till they were flat, then he would tap the inside and outside of a big flat panel like that with soft leather hammers to dissipate any distortion.
A good Porsche certified body shop can take the dent out, but from your description of the paint damage, the hood will likely have to be repainted to make it perfect. Your autograph collection doesn’t have to be disturbed.
