Default ::EBS Racing:: It's Time To Replace Your Shifter Detent

If you're a 996 owner with a 6-speed manual transmission, especially if your car has racked up a lot of miles in its lifetime, there's a good chance that you have a hard time keeping the gear lever in second. The second gear pop out issue is a huge annoyance while driving, and even worse, if it decides to pop out at an inopportune moment, can cause over revving and potentially damage your engine. Even if your car has never once popped out of gear, this is a quick and easy preventative solution that could save you an awful lot of headache in the future. Luckily, there is an easy fix for this simple problem, and your friends at EBS Racing can help.

One of the best parts of the Porsche driving experience is the gearbox. These cars normally have a very positive engagement and an easy to manipulate gear lever. When the gearbox won't hold second, however, it's easy to get frustrated. Don't let a worn detent break your concentration in the middle of a full throttle second-gear blast. Don't let something tha can easily be fixed keep you from enjoying your wonderful Porsche on the street or track.

Thanks to G-Box, there is a solution to make this problem stop forever, and to sweeten the deal, it can be installed in as little as 20 minutes. The fix can be done with the gearbox still in the car. In addition to that, this fix doesn't even require you to drain and refill your transmission, as the detent oriface is high enough that no fluid will drain out in the process. This might be one of the easiest Do-It-Yourself fixes there are for this chassis, and should not be overlooked.

At this point in the 996s life, we've developed a pretty lengthy list of things that need to be fixed proactively when you pick up a new one with unknown history. Porsche's first watercooled 911s are getting quite inexpensive these days, and it'd be a good idea to add this equally inexpensive part to your 'fix list' before you start your next 996 project. This detent fix should be one of the first things to add to your preventative maintenance It is important to address the issue early, however, as prolonging the fix can cause damage internal to the gearbox, and require you to tear it all apart to fix it. If your second gear keeps popping out during your drive, order one today and get the problem dealt with before it grows into a catastrophe.

This shift detent is guaranteed to work with all 996 6-speed manual gearboxes, including those found in GT3 and GT2 models. For more information on product benefits or fitment, or to place an order, call one of our EBS Racing Porsche specialists at 1-800-462-3774. Suggest you comment on the difference between this Detent and previous versions that some of us fitted. It would be interesting to know the improvements so we can decide if it would be wise to upgrade from the old style Detent to this new version.

Thanks SG... I just thought it a little strange that Jon/EBS would post that they're carrying/selling it and not post a link (or be able to find it on their site)...
