Can anybody advise on how long a clutch should last on C4, i have just had mine replaced after 8,000 miles. I appreciate that the wear rate will be higher than on a C2 due the greater traction. But my car is always driven sensibly and never used on track. Fortunatley i was advised of the limited clutch life when I had my gearbox replaced so only had to pay the part cost and no labour, as it was a warranty job on the gearbox.
That's a lower mileage than normal, but we have done several C4S clutches that were completely worn out at less than 15k miles.
In all of the cases the clutches had been slipped excessively, one because the owner had to reverse up a steep drive to his garage.
I believe part of the problem is the clutch action of the 993 compared to the 964, where the clutch can be operated by only one's ankle whereas in the 993 it's not so easy and one has to move the whole lower leg.
Anyway, with clutches, unless there is some obvious mechanical malfunction, premature wear is caused by miss-use.
that's not many miles to have a clutch replaced! it sounds like it's being used pretty aggressively. i have 31K miles on my 996 C4 and the clutch is fine. of course it's impossible to tell how much clutch is left until it's pretty much shot, so i have no idea how much longer it'll last. but in previous cars, i had 120K miles on a jetta and the clutch was still ok. and i had a passat with 40K miles and the clutch was fine. but i've been driving stick since i was 12 (farm boy) so i rarely rev over 1K rpm when starting the car, or 2K on a steep hill. i know i'm kind of the exception but i was figuring on getting at least 50K out of my C4 clutch.
I thought it was a bit excessive, one reason that porsche gave me was that when driving i may keep my foot on the clutch, therefore not letting it fully engage, causing slipping!. I said that this was not the case. I drove my 993 in much the same way and in the 3 years and 18k never had any problems!
