Default '02 Headlights on a '99

I'm in the process of getting my '99 C2 ready for a respray. I really like the '02-'05 Turbo bumpers and was curious if that bumper will work on my car. My existing headlights are shot so I thought it would be a good time to swap them to '02-'05 as well if this will work. Has anyone tried this before? Will the existing hood and fenders work? New to the forum so I hope I'm posting this in the right section.

Hey, welcome to the site!

I'm assuming you know that turbo cars weren't the only ones with 02 style headlights, and that you're interested in the turbo bumper specifically and the corresponding headlights are just part of the deal.

If I had to guess, I would say the fenders and hood are the same and its only the bumper. That being said, I don't know if a turbo bumper is a direct swap (vs. a narrow body 996.2) - but there is someone on these forums that has installed a turbo style front bumper (I think it was a C4S bumper) on a narrow body. If I remember correctly it was a 996.2 to start with though - that may or may not be significant.

You're in the right place and I'm confident you'll get some answers.

A couple things to consider:

- You can have facelift style headlights WITHOUT the turbo front bumper, as facelift narrow bodies had them too.
- The turbo bumper was designed for the rest of the turbo aerokit in mind and I don't believe recommended without the corresponding rear wing. That being said - the C4S and 40th anniversary edition cars both had turbo look front bumpers with slight aero modifications.

Personally I'm a fan of keeping things original. I like the 996.1 style headlights just as much as the 996.2. They're both unique and are the only two 911s without round eyes.

Good luck and post some pics.

Cheers
Charlie

You might as well just go with a 997 conversion if you are willing to do all that work.

Isn't the 997 conversion a lot more involved than that. Bumper and headlights are one thing but I wasn't really looking at replacing the entire front end. I don't mind my headlights now but I do like the extra detail on the 996.2. I know the turbo's are wider in the rear but is the front wider as well?

Yes, the 997 conversion involves the fenders. Plus, you'd end up with those ugly round headlights.

And, concur with Charlie - keep those beautiful GT1 headlights!

Why not get an aero bumper for your '99?

The '01 - '05 turbo headlights are actually styled a bit differently than the normally aspirated 996.2 cars. The turbo lights are smooth inside, while the others are ribbed. The external dimensions are the same. A few more things to think about:

- Turbo headlights are HID (Litronics). If your '99 has halogen lamps, then you'll need to do that conversion for the turbo HIDs to work.
- the Turbo cars have a different radiator configuration than the normally aspirated cars. You may need to address the duct work underneath the bumper cover. Turbos have the center radiator too; so you'll have an empty hole there if you don't have the center radiator.

I am not an expert in this field, but I seem to recall that there's something different about the fenders between the 996.1 and 996.2 cars. You should research this one before buying any parts.

Good luck!

This is probably the cheapest way to what you want. I actually like it.

MK1 to MK2 front end conversion is possible but fenders and lots of bolts and other things are required.

If you have the budget design911 sell it as a kit:

IMO you'll dent your resale if you don't care about that, go for it!

wow! Gorgeous. How did you accomplish this backdate to 996.1 lights? I want to do it with my 02 C4S. Please email me directly at blvendittelli@gmail.com

If you do the conversion make sure all the cooling ducts are properly installed too.

I dont think it's a back date, I think it's a forward date of a 99 C2 car.

I'm doing a Mk2 front end conversion on my car. You need the following to convert from Mk 1 to Mk 2:

New front bumper
New front fenders
New lights
New headlight trays

Plus any associated trimming, wiring, ducting, etc.
