DFW or N TX folk. IMS install party. Y'all come - ya heuh?
I'ma gonna do it!
June 3, starting around noon little AeroSport goes under the knife. We will be removing a perfectly good dual row IMS bearing and installing a newer, perfectly good replacement bearing. Also RMS and possibly a clutch.
We'll have some ribs, brisket, taters, maybe a Frosty Malted Beverage, possibly some fermented grape product.
C'mon down and have a good laugh. About 25 miles due north of Fort Worth. I don't want to put the addr or phone on this so you can get info by PM me, or check the website;
928srus.com
There's a breakfast meet in Arlington before and then off to the shop. All models are welcome. We'll have a couple 928s, couple 996, and a 991 or Cayenne maybe.

Doc, wait, so you're doing this at Roger's place? Isn't that a little like having quadruple bypass done by a neurosurgeon? BTW, I don't see it listed as an event on the 928srus.com website.
If I was in DFW, I'd definitely stop by. Probably would drive the S4, assuming it was out of the shop in time (where it's been holed up since early March).

Damn ... Google informs me that it's approximately 1,662.6 miles from here to there. Ribs, brisket, IMSB, and a cold one (or two)? Wish I could make it.

Hurdi, check your reading comp skillz...Nowhere does it say anything about a single row bearing... Anyway, I'm going to be a bit of a Debbie downer and warn against making a "party" of a a pretty serious job...While it's not rocket science, there is plenty of room for screw ups... Good luck, and I hope it works out

Your aviator just made me realize that our cars are the Carrera on the Hit Movie Cars. That's cool, I'll point this out to my daughter , she will get a kick outta that. Heck I like the movie too, just never realized it till I saw your avatar.

I'd definitely love to meet you guys at breakfast if the weather isn't awful. If it's bad out I'm not taking the 996 out of the garage.
I may even come enjoy the first part of the imsb festivities. Already got the okay from the boss. Can you kindly pm me with breakfast time and location?

Whelp, it's a done deal. Weather was indeed marginal. Spotty rain all day, and heavy some times.
Got the old bearing out and aside from one section of the seal it was in perfect shape. Nice and tight, no wobble, no metal coming off, and the bore looked great. New bearing went in fine except I had some struggle with the spirolock going into the groove. Needed 3 hands to compress and insert. Finally got it in and got the cap on.
I didn't get the trans back in because my clutch release bearing shows excessive wear, and the pivot ball is a bit sloppy. Couldn't find the parts avail on Sat afternoon so will be delayed until Tue.
Have to say it's not a fun job. The tensioner on top is a mothertrucker to access. Overall I'd rate the entire job about a 6 for a first timer. Now that I've done one, I'd rate it a 4.
Didn't have any guests, but just as well - because the weather was cruddy and humid.

Glad to hear things went relatively smoothly. I didn't want to risk the 996 in TX's uncertain weather. I still feel lucky getting it home from Denver in the snow.
I did trade my rat hole 951 project for a 944 driver today. I have mixed emotions about that but the 44 is pretty clean and mostly sorted. The 51 was going to be a forever project. I will get a 951 or maybe even a 928 soon enough.
