Thanks rogazilla for the heads-up, didn't know Costco carry M1 0W-40, that's great. Typically at the store they only have the typical 10W-30 and 5W-30. I also ordered 2 boxes for my next oil change in the Fall again. Cheers,

Nice, thanks! I ordered the max, 5 cases. Turns out our GL uses the exact same stuff so between these two I feel like I'm always running to WalMart for more. This time it's coming to me...

To OP. Since you've only had your 996 for two weeks I suggest you do a little research here about recommended oil. Nuf said.

I am scared to ask... but I did quite a bit of search on 'oil', 'mobil one', 'recommended oil'... I found the information LNE recommends and some people recommend to run on track but I don't see any against the M1 0w-40. Seems like a lot of people uses it based on the feed back here.
I am going to do the oil change this weekend with LNE adapter, is it M1 doesnt work well with that?

If you do a bit of research, you'll find people that side with Jack Raby at Flat Six (use Joe Gibbs DT40/avoid Mobil 1). And then there's people that are perfectly fine using Mobil 1 - perhaps because it is what Porsche uses.
I think there's a series of charts on the FlatSix Facebook page that compares the oil performance of different brands - does not cast a favorable light on Mobil 1. Does it really matter? I don't know. On my motorcycles, I switched from Mobil1 to Motul 300V the bikes do indeed sound better - particularly at idle, no noticeable difference on the butt dyno (for me anyway), maybe it'll help the engines last longer.
On a side note, when I painted the house my general contractor told me to never buy paint at big box hardware stores (e.g. Home Depot) because paint manufacturers give them an inferior product as a result of being squeezed on price. I always wondered if it's true and if applies to other things like buying engine oil from Walmart.
EDIT: Here's the verbiage for the FSI homepage. Please don't feel the need to justify your choice. Just pick something and move on, we can all agree to disagree.
- Don't become caught up in anyone's ploy to dictate the engine oil thats best for your engine. Over time other oils have been developed that we have found to be more superior than what the mmanufacturer would have recommended when your car was new. We have a biased opinion on this topic, so please don't ask us for an oil recommendation! We have worked with Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil to develop an application specific offering of engine oil just for the M96/M97 engine. Its called "DT40", so just buy it and know that it solved many problems in the development of it. Since 2006 we have worked to develop the best engine oil for our engines and until 2012 this wasn't offered to the general public. Each and EVERY Flat 6 Innovations engine is required to utilize this oil. The controversy related to other oil recommendations is something my company avoids completely. When you buy a new Porsche, they recommend Mobil 1, but when you buy my engine I'll tell you to avoid that offering completely.

Got it! I think it was similar argument over Mobile 1 in S2k. a lot of people report burning oil and such.
Funny thing in my bikes when I was doing tracks, I listened to the track guys and ran though Shell Rotella heavy duty and my bike sounded good ran strong and ran clean. Although my last bike didnt track and just ran the honda oil and didnt have any trouble or problem either.
I will keep this in mind and maybe do a short interval change.
