When you drive in places where the roads were designed for horses and buggies, being able to illuminate the corners of your car most in danger of crunching probably seems really useful.

It must be required in the vehicle code for some locales; otherwise, it wouldn't exist. Well, I can't guarantee that with "I'd die for this" certainty, but I'm pretty sure Porsche doesn't throw extra wiring and switching into the car because they want it to be heavier and cost more.
