Default Rear Main Seal Leak

CRAP!!!! Just found this leak today and my car has been out of warrenty since February! Has there been any feedback since the various threads on this topic about Porsche repairing this problem under warrenty for out of warrenty 996's? The oil is coming out in a fairly steady drip (about 1-2 drips per hour). I climbed under the car today to see if the bad news is real and its not looking good. CHRIST, I am starting to feel like I am driving a Bimmer!

If Porsche cannot fix this under warrenty...I AM OUT...Selling my 996 and no more Porsche's for me. I may have to slide over to Merc's or perhaps (dread the thought) back to Bimmer!

Dayum this sucks, I went through this with my 993 (5K to fix a carbon build up in the intake) a flaw that began to reveal itself immediately after the car stepped out of the warrenty. Looks like I am gonna get jacked again not in my 996 if Porsche does not cover this.

This really SUCKS!

This is a common problem in the 996, and the dealer as well as Porsche knows it. I would talk to my dealer to see how they would handle this. Hopefully they would fix it for free. The other option is to purchase an extended warranty package through one of the third party companies. It'll probably run about $2000.00 but well worth it since a single fix on the RMS does not gurantee that it won't leak again in 4000 miles. Good luck.

More importantly, anyone know WHY this is an issue? Bad part design, bad installation etc..........

I just bought a 99 without a warrenty and you guys have me scared.

Does anyone have a failed seal that the dealer removed? If it has gone hard and brittle it was probably running too hot for the compound. Is there a chance the shaft is wobbling/vibrating past the last bearing. The only other suspects are , poor shaft finish, bad alignment, or seal of the housing halves against the seal shell. The worst case is where the seal lip cuts the shaft down. It can be re-sleeved, but ....?

I'd like better than 3 thou. concentricity on my seal. I'm thinking the alloy case is drifting out over heat cycling. More case stiffening ribs help would correct that. Too bad an offset sleeve couldn't be pressed in to save all those otherwise sweet engines from the dumpster.

Pretty scary, it seems like it's only a matter of time.

PORSCHE REDEEMED! They are the tops in my eyes again.

I called the Service Manager today and he didn't even "hem or haw about it". He simply said "bring it in next Monday and Porsche will fix it under warrenty", and, they are going to give me a Cayenne loaner! The Service department at Sunset Porsche in Portland, Oregon RULES!

Default jealous!!!

Man, I'm jealous. Our RMS leaked in August (out of warranty just in March) and it COSTS us. Of course, our clutch was desparately in need of repair as well..... all to the tune of about $2,800............AAHAHAHAHAHH!!!!!!

Should we be calling POA and getting it reimbursed?!?!!? Or try to?!?!

Their parts dept. are great as well. I wish I lived closer to them as I would use them for service....

I am double jealous. Had mine done on th good will scheme but had to pay £200 towards the cost. Looks like you win this round. But hey all you got to woory about now is your gearbox :-(

PS: 2 drips an hour. Wow that is bad. Hope your clutch is OK.
