Default 1999 996 Weight Loss Program - Slick Top Conversion

Finished removal of the sunroof / roof skin as part of the 2017 weight loss program for the Green Machine. Not a bodywork expert by any means but was able to remove all the inside bits (in spite of roll cage already being installed) and cut all the spot welds to pull off the old skin. Got to buy a nice angle grinder and (4) weld cutting bits (they break). Whole project was about 5 hours of labor. More pix to follow.

Pretty cool! How much weight savings with this project?

Very cool indeed, what type of metal for the roof, or are you using cf?

Some pix of the new slicktop. I had to go with a factory part, due to PCA SP996 class rules. It fits perfectly, and I'll talk with the bodyshop to see if they suggest using adhesive or welding it in place.

I'll look back at my notes to see exactly how much weight came out from this part of the project.

What's the part number and price of the roof skin? I'm actually in the process of this but, I was going to have my sunroof skin welded in.

Great work.

Can you take a picture of the inside of both roofs? I'm curious to see what (if any) additional structure or bracing existed in the non-sunroof one.

Trendy 996 - Slakker gave the correct p/n for the roof skin above. Cost was $600 delivered to my local dealership. The pic below shows some additional bracing/boxing of the sunroof opening. The slicktop is a pure skin with none of this extra metal. It would be a cool conversion on a street car if painted to match other interior painted surfaces.

You can see the additional bracing around the sunroof opening here.

I can't wait to get mine removed. I took the full sunroof out. My car is a street car but, it's set up for track. I have a carbon skin but, I'm just not sure if I want to use it and just get a oem metal skin. I can get them for 450 delivered to me. That's bc I work for a high end shop.

Anyone with a street car buy the non-sunroof headliner to use inside or make a headliner from the fitment parts of the sunroof headliner?
