Okay, I'll soon be the proud owner of what is apparently the "finest example of a 996" I'll ever find. That being said, it has an after market stereo system (which is the way the current owner bought it) and he doesn't have the original. When I looked up the VIN and option codes, I discovered it came with a CDR-220. That's easy enough to find for $150 to $200, and a very simple install. However, I've contemplated getting the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System (despite the price), but I'm not certain if it will fit in the 996.
Porsche's website notes it fits in pretty much everything up to the 993. However, the site also says it fits in "Porsche cars with a DIN-1 slot." I'm fairly certain the 996 has DIN-1 slots (though I could be wrong). Does anyone know if the Classic Radio Navigation System will fit and work in the 996?
The basic OEM radio is single DIN, so it's just a matter of getting the correct cubbies. That being said, I really don't see the point of that radio. Seems like the screen is just too small to be of any real use.

Oh yeah, it's pointless… but I still like it! I have a contact, so I can pick one up for about $1000 instead of the $1250 it normally is (which is still a lot), but I still haven't decided if I really want to do that. I also realized I attached the wrong photo earlier, not sure if that was a prototype shot, render or what, but here's what it actually looks like:
IMO, just looking at the locks for the radio to lock into the dash, is not going to work. no slots at the bottom.
slots on the bottom?
If it is in fact a single DIN radio, it should fit physically. Looking at the wiring diagram, other than no MOST connection for 03/04 amp and CD changer, it looks like plug and play

the radio will fit physically, just won't be able to lock it in the panel.
I've got an Alpine single DIN in my car, and it looks (and sounds okay). I still think it would be super cool to dump the HU and just have a cable (under the center armrest) to go directly from my phone to an amp. Then I could just have a cubby under the HVAC. Super clean look, especially with my center console delete.
What system does your 996 have? Door subs? Frunk amp???
I haven't got the car yet, it;ll be shipped from Georgia, I'll probably get it about the third week of February. However, according to option codes, it originally had the CDR-220 and "Basic Sound System"

It's a 2001, so I should be good there.

So, it should work on the 996 and properly lock in?
Here's what's in the car now (so you can see why I want to replace it):
And it appears there an Alpine amp up front, maybe?
I would be interested it taking all that out. I don't listen to a lot of music in the car as I'd rather hear the car. But, it's nice to have when I want to hear music. I don't need a fancy, loud sound system. Stock is fine with me. I just hope I can take that amp out without causing any damage.
The radar detector is something else to contend with, I don't like the placement of it… or really, much of the center console. I'll be doing some rearranging.
Hopefully the person that put in the aftermarket radio did not destroy the factory harness and used an adapter harness, otherwise you will need to find a harness and wire it in
Yep, dude you may be in a world of hurt trying to sort out what's been cut and re-wired for the system. On the bright side, it looks like that's an old Passport SR1 custom installed radar detection system which could mean the stereo was also professionally installed. As Jay mentioned, if they cut the original harness, then it's going to be a lot of work going back to a Porsche/Becker radio like the CDR-220 or new Porsche Nav Classic.
