Don't really want to start an argument!!! I have had my '02 C2 for almost 5 years. When I was looking I had decided that I liked the second gen lights a little better, but then again I soon went ahead and put those covers on them. I've actually been surprised at the positive comments I've received, because I know some hate them, but too bad, it's my car!
Having said that, I've come to appreciate the original design, especially when the egg yolks have been removed.
MK2 all day long! I don't like the masks, I prefer the original Pinky Lai design.
Of course, I don't hate the MK1 design either. I not a part of the purist group that hate the "fried egg" look of the 996. The 996 was a radical car that *saved* Porsche. It's a fact.... even Ferry Porsche admitted it and sadly, it was the last 911 he witnessed to go into production.
MkI all day long. The sharp line of the MkII have never sat well with me as I don't think it fits with the rest of the car which is very soft and fluid in its lines.
The MkI lights are actually what allowed me to join the Porsche world. I always hated the classic bug eye look (except for one we saw around D.C. That added rebar eyelashes, that was hilarious). Had Porsche never changed the lights, I wouldn't have bought the car for my wife (her childhood dream car). Now I own a P!g too, all because of one of the most hated features of the 996
I prefer the 997 lights, but 996.1 over 996.2. Not really a big deal either way. My Volkswagen bug has round lights and those don't necessarily thrill me.
Coincidentally, just today I saw a 996.1 driving behind me on the road and I thought "Man those lights are fugly". Luckily I don't see the lights when I'm enjoying the drive.

IIRC, it was the 986, not the 996 that "saved" Porsche

That's kind of how I feel too. The cut lines on the .2 are too abrupt.
Here are my headlight covers, which still utilize the fog lights, but I didn't buy the version with the holes for the headlight washers. Too busy looking IMO. If I had to do it again I might even eliminate the fog lights, as I've never used them.
The Mk I without amber on the aerokit cars looks just right. Neither the Mk II (actually turbo) or the traditional round headlights would looks as good on that car.
996 Mk I: Considered by many to be the most heinous abomination ever to grace the exterior of any 911. The primary reason an entire generation of 911s are scorned.
991: the current evolution of the 911 headlight
993: considered by the purists to be the ultimate in automotive design.
