Default Broken oil fill tube

While I was installing a schnell intake hose kit, I accidentally broke off the first 6-7 inches of the oil fill tube. I'm going to have my mechanic replace it as I've read it's a pretty tough job. My question is, can I drive the car the way it is the 7 miles i need to go if I cover it with tape or shove a golf ball in there?

When I broke mine, I emergency repaired it with Gorilla tape. Car ran fine for two weeks until new tube arrived.

Replacement is not difficult, just takes time to remove things. Remove airbox, throttle body, accessory belt, and alternator. This gives you access to the two bolts holding the tube to the block.

When mine broke I went to home depot and got a rubber plumbing piece to connect two pipes. A few clamps later and it's good to go.

I just broke mine forgetting to unclip the tube when removing the air box. I would love to see a photo of your repair job as I intend doing the same. Thanks. Did you use 2 jubilee clips?

It's not that difficult to replace. I only pulled the alternator.

It would be worth verifying that none of the plastic made it down the fill tube.

Once you've determined no plastic bits made it down the filler, seal the broken end of the tube with duct tape or your temporary repair medium of choice - otherwise you will have a godawful vacuum leak. Once it's airtight, I see no reason why you should't be able to drive it - at least until you get to the point where you need to add oil.

Is this a common problem?

Yup.
You would think there was a heat resistant upgrade by now.....wire, Spiral reinforced, lined silicone?
Must be something here that would last forever?

regular silicone is not very oil-resistant and prone to collapse with vacuum. So a special type would be required.
