Angry Short in Cigarette Lighter Socket?

The fuse to the cigarette lighter on my 2002 C2 Cab keeps blowing out. I use the socket for my cell phone's car charger. Is the culprit that there's too much current being pulled, or could there be a short? What size fuse should I use, or the max size I should use?

Thanks

Look at the fuse assignment sheet on the cover for the fuses. I have an older car and the lighter is row D fuse # 5. 5 amps. Nothing else is listed on the circuit for that fuse. Jeff

Thanks Tool Pants.

Is there anything wrong with using a fuse of higher capacity?

Put in a 30 amp fuse and fry those wires.

Look at your charger and see amperage rating as that will shed light on why the fuse keeps blowing. Jeff

Default Short in lighter is common

I had the same short in my lighter. I was told at a Porsche dealer that it was a design defect, and to make the lighter not short, place the metal fingers of your lighter plug at 1:00 and 7:00 in the socket. Otherwise, the metal fingers can cause a short.

I also replaced three fuses and watched them "pop".

The fix was under warranty.
