Default 996 C2 Track Prep Project

I just thought I would share my project so far if anyone is interested. I bought a 99 C2 a few months ago with the intentions of it being a street/track car but defiantly more so for the track. I have attached pictures of its progress so far. The wheels and tires were replaced the day I bought the car as well as the gundo hack on the mufflers. I took the rear seats out and built my own roll bar. It is all Tig welded and bolted in. I have a set of Sparco Evo 3 seats that I am finishing up the mounts for now. Also will be using G force 6 point cam-lock harnesses. Also replacing the 4 spoke steering wheel with a suede Driven wheel.

I bought a Misha Designs GT2M wing and just got that back from the body shop. I also had them spray the rear bumperettes while they were doing the wing. I must say the wing fit perfectly and is very high quality.

Before spring I need to get the suspension and brakes wrapped up but just wanted to share its progress so far.

I don't think so. It has a dual row IMS from the factory and its made it that far. I will take my chances with that. I will get way more out of this car putting that into suspension and brakes. I have a set of JRZ's ready to go. I am just getting together the rest of what I need now. Control arms, sway bars, ect.

Looks really good! Are you going for a specific class? That will tell you a lot of what you can and can't do (I know...).

Also are you working with a race wrench? What you don't know about race/track prep can hurt you. Don't need them to do it, but at least advise.

Good luck!!

Right now I'm just looking to do some hpde days with PCA, NASA, and some other local clubs. I have been talking with the own of a local porsche shop that runs a few cup cars. He's been lots of help.

This is not my first track/race car. Before this I had a M3 prepped for GTS with NASA. Iv also had several over bmw race cars over the years. It was just time to go to something street legal that I could enjoy a little more often.

Thanks!
Low temp thermostat (160F instead of 187F) is a cheap one to help keep your temps lower. That and high quality oil to protect the internals (ex. XP9) + shifting at 6.5k to minimize internal temps (oil temps get a little nutty in the m96). Third radiator kit can help support the LTT as well.

Just some ideas from the time I've spent reading up on tracking the 996. Slakker & vandersmith have some cool build threads you can easily find. GL with your build, car looks fun!

It's looking great! These cars are crazy fun. PM me if you need any suspension bits, I seem to have accumulated quite a few. Also, the brakes mainly just need pads and fluid upgrade. Anything else will improve feel but not drop your lap times any. Keep us updated!

I'm going to put new oem rotors, then upgrade pads, lines, fluid. Any suggestions on a decent pad for track and street?

also what suspension parts do you have laying around? Any decent lower control arms?

I like the Hawk DTC-70 pads. They squeal a little on the street but are incredible on the track and reasonably priced. For rotors I like the Sebro slotted. The OEM perform well but the cross drilled in general tend to crack with heavy track use.

I have a full set of front and rear 996 GT3 Cup LCA's. The main diffidence from the regular GT3 LCA is they have factory monoballs at the subframe side(inner). They are missing one small piece on one of the rears that I need to source but are in great shape besides that.

I also seem to have lots of drop links and a couple of pairs of rear toe arms.

I ran dtc70s on my m3. They were incredibly loud. Not sure I want those on a street car. I may just go oem for now and if I don't like them on the track I'll go with theverything dtc70s and swap them out.

I'm PMing you now about the arms.

Great start! I focused on brakes, reducing weight, and complete suspension upgrade. I went with a Tarret package deal with JRZs. Ira is a lot help for getting the correct setup.

I am using RS 29s for pads.

What tracks do you run?
