997 GT3 center muffler retrofit for 996 c2/c4
Hi all,
Ive recently done a gt3 center muffler conversion on my 2000 carrera c2 with great results, in both sound and performance! A little back story on why i chose to go this route. I bought my 996 last year in hopes to create a perfect track focused build that doesnt compromise street driving comfort. First i tackled the suspension and interior such as the seats and roll cage, but when it came to the exhaust side i didnt see anything that fulfilled my needs for a good sound, and performance.
ive tried the following exhaust setups;
1) Fabspeed muffler delete (came on the car): Too loud, and lost low end torque
2) Billy&Boat: Ugly square oval tips and too quiet.
3) PSE hack: OEM level, good tone but quiet.
4) IPE f1 exhaust: Lost power, and sounded too tinny.
Ive always liked the look of the GT3 center exit exhaust on 997-991 gt3 so i started to look for what other owners have done in the past, but unfortunately found no info, so what the heck! ill be the guinea pig for this project!

since the exhaust manifolds on the 996 3.4/3.6 carrera converge towards the center on the engine (for a tighter package) it was impossible to run the piping the way as the GT3, unless you dont care about drivability and potential power loss. Therefore i fabricated a crossover design that mimics the stock carrera piping length running to each sides of the muffler using 2.5" piping.

This is the finished product, i accidentally trimmed the bumper too high so it looks like the muffler is hanging really low but im planning install my 996 cup rear bumper soon.

Nice work and cool mod.it looks a little heavy though. Any idea what it weighs?

Also, you never showed how you crossed the two pipes over Looks like you did a really nice job though... crazy nice weld!

yeah, it was more work than i anticipated...so how does it compare? it basically sounds like a gt3 with the butterfly valve kept open, over 4k rpm the howl is amazing. but kept under 4k it sounds pretty stock and theres no drone. when i had the straight pipes on the car it would resonate the low frequency noise, making the car sound the same (low and loud) throughout the entire rev range. with this setup the power seems to be smoothed with more power across the rev range but ill dyno it to verify that it isnt just a placebo effect haha

Dude. Loving your build. 996.1 aero with a center exit setup is my plan as well, although I'm still working on the 996.1 part... Definitely need more sound clips!
This car was on a One Take video, right?
