2001 996 red aero fair price
Trying to get a handle on price range for offer on 996.
Lots of listing price info but not much on actual selling prices.
2001
CA car
55k miles
One owner (Private seller)
Red and Beige
Aero factory
Manual
Clean car fax
IMS, water pump done preventive by good shop
Good maintenance history with receipts
Few options other than Aero with code shows as factory
Seller is asking 26k
Its been for sale for almost 8 months. Tells me price is high. Seller said he turned down 22k.

A very similar car sold on BAT recently for 26k. That could be the sellers benchmark.

BAT typically brings higher prices than private party sales. 23k sounds about right. 26k is a premium, 20k is a deal.

Not sure what the car will sell for. If the car is a good example, and based on what you posted it reads like it is, while it may not be worth $26K it could very well be worth more than $22K.

Maybe he's just waiting for the right buyer to pay his full asking price? I know when I sell my vehicles, I don't deviate from my list price. I'd rather wait for the right buyer to come along. I would assume for most of us here, $3K is not a deal breaker if the car checks off all the boxes for you.

A 2001 with 55k miles on it in very good condition with records sold on Ebay for $17,900 on Sept. 27 this year. Saw a 90k miles car sell for $11k. Another one with 40k miles, orig owner, all records, ims and new clutch, sold for $23,950. I would say that is the top of the market for a low mile 2001.

It is not uncommon for a private seller to have an optimistic (sometimes a very optimistic) price in mind for his car (or as I learned for used machinery, too).
Not much one can do about this is the seller can't be swayed from his price.
My advice is if the price is too high, unacceptably high, to keep an "eye" on the car. Sometimes after months of no sale and after showing the car over and over again, insurance or registration and maybe even smog comes due and the seller then is more agreeable to a lower price. I'm not saying one can "steal" the car but one can sometimes buy it for less than the seller was asking for the car earlier.
'course, one probably keeps looking and often one finds another car in the meantime.

I think the price is a bit high, but that doesn't mean he won't be able to get it.
I think in this case, Stan23 is right. When I sold my Lexus I was asking top dollar. It was worth it and I didn't have to sell, so I was able to hang on to it until I found the right buyer.
In the end it comes down to how motivated the seller is and how motivated you as a buyer are. I paid a bit more than I wanted for mine, but the seller had me at a bit of a disadvantage as he knew I had driven about 3 1/2 hours to look at it. (Given the logistics, there was no way to not disclose that.) He had a good idea that I wouldn't walk over $1500. He was right. He did move a bit on the price, but I paid about $1500 more than I thought I could buy a similar car for. Overall I am very happy with my new ride and don't miss that $1500.

If 26k is unacceptable I'm sure you can just pull up another well maintained, Guards Red, aero MK1 for a better price .
