V1's have been my go to. Pulled the old K40 unit out of my Turbo as it seemed to attract attention when on.

Well, got my Escort Redline mounted and hard wired into the 996. I put it high on the windshield to get the best reception and I must say that thing is super sensitive. It picked up K and KA bands farther than my Escort Max2.

THANK YOU HURDI for showing me the telephone connection to wire in a 12V switched source. That saved a lot of trouble.

And thank you to all that contributed to this thread. I downloaded the Waze app and really like it a lot. It seems to have a great network of users, plus I love the Bluetooth audible alerts to remind you when the speed changes. (that's what got me the ticket last month) Situation awareness is my thing and with the two running side by side, I can relax more when driving the Porsche up to the mountains.

Cheers!

Very happy with my Radenso detector. Company does a great job of pushing software updates to deal with new signal distractions.

V1 + Bluetooth adapter + Android Phone with Yavi1 and Waze

I don't think I can use the V1 without Yavi1. It does too much false detections but once you custom set all the correct frequencies with Yavi one, it runs awesome!

I'd recommend V1 as well. I had an escort 8500 and it was complete crap. Would randomly false for no reason at all. I've gotten 2 speeding tickets in my life and BOTH times I had that piece of junk in the car. I've since thrown it into the trash. Literally, one time I got a ticket and it never went off. The cop even commented that he is surprised I was going so fast because the detector should have told me he was around the corner (he had been driving in the opposite direction). I replied that it didn't work very well, then, on cue it went crazy beeping. It had been quiet the whole time with the police car directly behind me with radar on - then after 5 minutes decided to make noise. Complete junk and obviously defective - I'd imagine most of them work fairly well, but I'll never consider buying one due to my first experience.

Story #2 - back in high school a friend of mine bought BOTH the passport 8500 and a V1. We did a very unscientific test (found one of those 'your speed is' signs and saw which one alerted first). The V1 did.

Finally, the third story/reason to go with a V1. Mike Valentine (the guy that created the V1) is a Porsche enthusiast. I've seen his cars at Porsche events here in Cincinnati (last year a 918 and this year a GT3RS).

+1. Waze is the most accurate "radar detector" available, its free, and best of all there are no annoying false reads...

This state S---Ks.
Been pulled over a few times in CA and other states with the radar detector suction cup mounted at the top of the windshield. Cop could care less, with one exception.

Had police cars, highway patrol cars come up behind me with the radar detector mounted at the top of the windshield. In fact I was in my Boxster and a MO state trooper pulled up behind me and I watched him as he reached down and I guess turned on his radar gun. 'course, the V1 went crazy and and the LED lit up and flashed. No reaction from the officer.

In one case -- in TX -- I got pulled over for speeding when it was a car that was passing me that was speeding. I had slowed down because the V1 was warning me the police car was ahead and I had heard the reports over the CB radio from the truckers and a driver got impatient and zoomed around my car just as we crested a rise with the cruiser ahead in the median. In this case I pointed out to the officer that I had the V1 and knew he was ahead of me a mile or more before I reached his position. He gave me a warning.

The one exception was when I got pulled over in AZ just west of Williams and the state trooper gave me some static about the radar detector and NAV unit mounted on the windshield. I pointed out when driving into the sun with the visor down the visor blocked more of my vision than the two items on the windshield.

The trooper got testy and told me he could confiscate both units if I insisted on not removing them. I complied and believe it or not kept the units off the windshield until I crossed into NM. Sometimes an officer will call ahead and let another officer know about a stop and just when one thinks it is safe and puts the radar detector or whatever back up again bam here comes another cruiser.

But I didn't get pulled over again but I was prepared and clean.

Oh, I got pulled over for not signaling. I was so tired I was falling asleep at the wheel and just wanted to get off the freeway. I didn't cut him or anybody off just moved over and off the freeway taking the ramp.

The officer made a big show of having me work the signals which of course worked fine. (I think I was so sleepy I might have been working the OBC stalk instead of the turn signal stalk before but I didn't argue.) Told me he expects better driving from us Porsche drivers. Got a warning though no ticket.

This is why I mount (no suction cups) to the upper portion of the windshield in the tinted area which makes it easier to drive without obstacles in my line of sight and keeps the PO-PO off my back. I don't mine suction cups, but I can't stand all the wires hanging down. That's why I prefer to hard wire my units to direct switched power.

Well, the 8500 has been around a while is definitely not up to par with current Escort Max or Redline technology and I wouldn't say it a fair comparison to the Valentine V1. The V1 is better matched in capabilities to the Max360 or Redline. I have much respect for both companies, but it appears you had a defective 8500 unit based on your comments above. However, the 8500 is value performer and not considered their top of the line. Of course, Valentine doesn't fool with multiple models, but just sticks with provide one model with the best performance. However, as many have noted, upgrading the unit is expensive and one would be better off just replacing it. With Escort, firmware and software updates are free. Defender database files are free for a year and then you can pay a low annual fee to continue. I've been using their units for years with no problem at all. The Max is the most radical change in detectors since it directly links to Escort Live to provide additional supports. You can run both Waze and Escort Live side-by-side. The V1 really never got off the ground with live mobile alert communities like Escort Live. But still, the V1 is a great unit.

Again, you're comparing apples to oranges. The Valentine 1's performance is better matched to the Redline in Highway mode. Side by side, you'll see a huge difference. In some frequencies, the V1 will perform better and in others, the Redline. Another thing to note is the Redline is invisible to Spectre (i.e. radar "detector detectors") unlike the V1. But of course, the V1 will give you 360 degree support. Bare in mind, most threats are from the front. The Redline will still perform very well from rear radar bursts. I wouldn't be surprised if Escort's next version of the Redline will give 360 coverage will all of the current capability.

hahaha. that's cool! but I'm not sure I want to make a radar detector purchase based on the car preferences of the company's owner. Be like buying a Pro Mac because Steve Jobs drove a Mercedes.

Thanks Charlie!

I got bagged years ago going 88 in a 55 in my 944. A friend I was following in his Taurus going the exact same speed was written up for only 65. I went to court and got the ticket dismissed.

Got tagged for going 33 over the speed limit and they didn't put you in jail? hahaha

But you went to court and got it dismissed and so what was your excuse? The "Taurus made me do it!" or... "The officer must of got the wrong reading and it was actually the guy in the Taurus doing 88"???

Nice!

Escort solo S3. No cords and works great. Can be mounted anywhere because of no cords and can be moved to multiple vehicles.
To the OP. 33mph over?? Should have pulled a Seinfeld and stated to the officer..." Only 33mph over? I must have slowed down to take that last turn......"

I understand the Escort Solo 3 is popular because of the convenience of being cordless, but I wouldn't put convenience over performance when it comes to radar detectors. The Escort S3 is known to perform poorly when compared to the Redline and V1. The S3 alerted KA/K band at almost 2500 feet less in capture distance tests. But if you're happy with it, than more power to you.

btw... funny advice on the Seinfeld remark! hahaha

I work with alot of LE and know their tactics and that can make a world of difference not relying blindly on the radar detector. Its a drivers aid. That said, I have found the S3 to be better than my last S2 which paid for itself many times. Where you mount the detector also makes a huge difference in its effectiveness.
