Default OCI

Hello,

I understand that the majority of us believe 5k miles is a good OCI for our cars. But I have done a few UOAs and seems like going 8-10k miles would really not make a difference in my case. Granted, I drive about 2k miles a month with a 55 mile round trip commute on the highway. As long as I keep my oil level near full, I think it should be more than fine. Any thoughts?

Since oil is the lifeblood for an engine and with all the documented issues that can arise with our engines, changing the oil and filter at 5K intervals is cheap insurance for me. Going with your preferred brand of synthetic oil is fine, we all seem to have our preference. But change the oil!

That is true Esfoad. Even though wear metals may be low at 5k miles, it is possible that the oil is getting dirtier each drive. This contamination may not always show up as anything other than insolubles. That was why I am contemplating sticking with 5k or less.

Lol, not really. I may just do one 8 or 10k run and have it analyzed. The thing is, I have to add a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so. I would be adding over 5 quarts of oil over this period, which is renewing the additive pack and replacing older oil. I still like to inspect the oil filter every 2-3k miles so it's not like any of this really saves me much work. I enjoy the easy oil changes and bonding with my car. I am just trying to understand if daily driving with longer commute is a good reason to extend the OCI a bit. I am totally onboard with 5k or less if you are only driving 5k miles in 6 months or more. In which case, just change the oil twice a year. In my case, I might be changing the oil almost 5 times a year which seems sorta crazy. haha

I've read that the 9A1 may use oil at the rate you are but I didn't think the M96/M97 were oil burners. Have you always used this much or is it a recent occurrence?

Its been relatively steady since I bought the car in April. However, I just switched to 5W40 Motul and it seems like the oil consumption is down a little. I am not totally sure yet, I only have 2k miles on the Motul.
