Winter "steelies"
I've scoured these boards (and the internet) looking for information on inexpensive winter wheel and tire options. I've found a lot of good information, but there is one very specific thing I haven't found. Does anyone know whether those simple, black, steel wheels that you see people use during the winter on their cars are available in fitments that would work on a 996 C4S? I'd like separate winter wheels, but would prefer to forgo the expense associated with alloys.
Thanks,
Steer

I have not tried to source steel wheels in the past. When I've needed a winter setup, I go to tirerack.com and order a set of wheels with winter tires already mounted, which beats the crap out of buying wheels, then buying tires, then getting them mounted, blah blah blah.
The cheapest wheels Tirerack sells for the C4 are $49 each; I'm not sure you're going to find legit "steelies" for that price.
Your UPS guy will hate you; otherwise, Tirerack can be hard to beat.

Porsche recommends downsizing for winter tires. IE: 265 for 285 on C2 rear. I have to look in my manual to see if Turbo goes to 10" rims and 265/285? also. If you are going to have a set of dedicated winter tires/rims you might consider going to 17" to get higher sidewall for increased pothole protection.

Porsche recommends a 10" rear wheel for 996 C4S and turbo cars with a 265mm width winter tire. A 17" wheel won't clear the front brakes, so 18" is recommended.

Your best bet might be finding used OEM wheels for sale that are a little rough cosmetically. You can always make them look nicer during the summer months.
I was lucky. I found a used set of Sport Technos in very good condition with Pirelli winter tires for $700. They also came with OEM spacers which I later sold.
