996 Oil Changes - Porsche Dealer or Not?

Next thing you know I'll be washing the car with purified water taken from a mountain spring high in the Bavarian Alps.

It's super easy to change the oil on these cars. Everything is right there, and easily accessible. The only issue I've had is worrying that the drain pan contraption thing I have won't take in all the oil as it comes out fast and there is a lot of it.
Compared to the 2006 Jetta we have, that you almost burn your hands to get the filter on if the car is warm, or my 1998 Jeep cherokee that has a angled drain plug which makes a mess and my feet are about half in the air leaning into the darn thing to get the filter on.
I change it twice a year at 5000 miles, and change my filter once a year.

My dad had my sister and me changing oil in the cars from the time we got learner's permits. I'm not leery of doing the work myself.
The issue becomes what to do with the old oil. It means bottling it up and hauling it to a toxic waste recycling center. Or I can pay an extra $80 or so for an hour of shop labor and they deal with the waste.

Most of them recycle oil for free

In BC if you sell oil you have to either take it back or have arrangements with another facility to take it for your customers.
The city recycling depots also take it .
I'm cheap , Canadian Tire has castrol edge 5w40 (a40 approved) on sale for 40 percent off a couple times a year and I buy filters by the case , so I change my oil twice a year in the spring and in October .its easy to do .

Thanks! I'd love to save $100 or whatever by doing the work myself plus I get a buzz from doing jobs like this myself. But when it comes to my 911 I think the peace of mind I will get from having an expert do the work is "worth" the money to me. Thanks!!

I haven't, personally, done maintenance on my own cars for over 30 years. Always had someone else do it for me. Now retired and although getting old I did my own oil change, spin-on conversion and mag plug this spring. Easy! If you have the time and place to do it can be satisfying and you learn about the car as well. Not hard at all...and WELCOME!

I agree with others about the spin-on oil adapter and magnetic drain plug. As far as which brand and type of oil to use - do some reading and make up your own mind. It is one of those topics that starts range wars.
I know that in New York state, any business that sells motor oil must take in old oil for free. I thought this was a federal regulation but maybe it's just by state.
There is a wealth of information on this site and many people who are happy to help. I find that working on the car, even oil changes, helped me feel more familiar with the car and stopped me from thinking that it was a priceless work of art that only experts should approach.
Enjoy your 996, it's a great car!
