Rev Limiter
Bumped the rev limiter last night while I was paying attention. I was coming through the Liberty Tunnels and had an open lane and the top was down. It was really just asking for a hard 2nd gear pull. I ran it up to 7 grand and go to shift, but nooooooo. The rev limiter kicks in at 7k. From the tach I thought I had another 500 rpm to shift. Eh, la vita e bella.
I am not worried about hurting the engine, or a chronic abuser of my little German friend. That is what they make rev limiters for, so nincompoops don't break things. I believe that is a type 1 error.
7k is what it is set at, is that correct? someone go and bump it and tell me.

I agree - I thought rev limit was 7,300 as well. The M96 pulls hard in 2nd gear, so that time between 7K and 7.3K isn't much.
You're right that this is a range 1 over-rev (well, in fact it will be a number of them, since each ignition event is counted, not each instance of over-rev).
I'd love to go confirm this, but my 996 is still on jack stands waiting for the call from Discount Tire.

For reference:
Range 1 is actually a range; Range 2 was an absolute max. Range 2's are also referred to as "downshift over-revs" since the rev limiter makes it hard to get there any other way.

Thank you Schnell for the VERY informative graphic. Earlier this year, traveled to the West Coast. In August, made it to NYC. Live in the Chicago area. What other car inspires such legendary road trips? No issues along the way.
