Finally picking up my 996 LS3
#16
As a 996/LS3 owner with at least 10k miles on mine, I would like some info on your Turbo Tranny, as mine runs about 2800rpm at 70mph and I'm in the process of researching LSD and tranny options. Let me know if you need any advise/info. Check out my build thread at http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...version-9.html

@Fierolfy I spent about an hour on your build thread. Fantastic build. The only thing I questioned was calling yourself a redneck when you are laying down that kind of complicated work and problem solving. Regarding the trans, I bought a rebuilt 996TT. I will do some RPM/speed measurements at 2,3,4,5krpm. I will also measure top speed in each gear and post them here.
The real issue about these conversions is that the transmission in the 996 C2 and C4 is fundamentally flawed. With any system, the weak point defines the limit of the system. The 996 C2 and C4 transmissions are the weak point in the drive train, with the pinion bearing being the weak link. Putting higher torque in front of the stock trans will lead to regular failures. Replacing the stock bearing with a stronger bearing or unsealed bearing has been tried and it doesn't fix the problem. it is a design flaw by porsche much like the IMS bearing issue in the engine. The 996TT trans is a very different design and can handle double the power and torque of the 996 C2/C4 trans.
So how does driving the porsche compare to an A10? Seems like you already piloted the ultimate canyon carver

I disagree that the transmission is flawed. It is actual pretty well designed and performs very well up to about 350hp. The only issue I know of is the 2nd gear pop out but I haven't experienced it on either of my 17 year old transmissions.
Ok, just had to say my piece, carry on. We still want to hear the story of how you got it and the conversion process.

Not sure if there were any major updates to the 997 tranny besides gearing but Bisi is using the 997 manual gearbox on his 770hp turbocharged m96 powerplant if that says anything.
I find guys that break trannies most of the time are usually the guys that can't drive or don't have enough finesse.
