Default Why do I have two Amps

This is probably an impossible question without seeing the setup but my 1999 006 C4 has the stock and an aftermarket Amp in the Frunk. It is some kind of a Alpine radio.

Any reason it would have two amps and take up half the Frunk space?

Just in case their happens to be a stereo wizard in here somewhere.

Or should I just rename the thread Stupid Stereo Questions.

As far as I can tell all speakers are stock. 2 duo speakers on top of the dash, Two round speakers in the doors, 2 duo speakers at the sides of the passenger seats. So the normal 6 speaker setup. No woofer or anything else like that. Head unit is an Alpine IVA-D105R unit or at least looks just like it. There are s hit load of wires plugged into both amps and the back of the radio made me say OMG and just put the side panel back on LOL:

The car also has a tiny red button inside the center console and a LED light in one of the blank switch tabs on the dash that I have no clue what they do, but don't think it has anything to do with the radio. The previous owner and the original owner have no clue also. DOH! something weird here LOL:

everything works so I guess the best idea is not to futz with it eh?

They may have kept the stock amp because they might be using two of the channels to run a couple speakers and then they used line level converters from the stock amp output to get signal to the two new amps, which I assume are both two channel amps. They probably just didn't want to run RCA cables into the frunk which is actually terribly easy to do. Disconnect power or signal to each amp separately and see what happens with the sound. There might be an open wire going to a phantom sub that they took out when they sold the car.

Just unhook the rca cables... do it while the stereo is on. You'll be able to tell easily and it's easy enough to put back.

I bet it had a woofer or two inside a box that rode in the rear. Might check around there for some wire ends.
Are you sure the black box is an amp? No cooling fins.

Yep the black box is an AMP, I actually looked up the model number a while back, can't remember it now. No wires in the back that I have found and I have been into it pretty deep doing stuff on the top and drains etc.

I will mess with it when I can but it really does not matter one way or the other. :-)

D class amps don't run as hot like the old Mosfet amps so they don't have fins sometimes.

Before you break alot of expensive equipment you should go to a stereo shop and have them tell you what you have in the system, and why. There is a purpose for all that equipment, maybe if you dont want it they will unhook it and take it for free, and hook you back up so you can hear the radio

unhooking RCA cables will not hurt in any way. I used to own a car stereo shop in my previous life.. a long, long time ago.

Aren't 996 RCA cables attached to the IMS though?

Your Porsche is a 10 speaker/6 channel system. It's not uncommon for people to install two amps to handle the 6-ch load instead purchasing one 6-ch amp. 6-ch amps are a lot more expensive and many cases you can purchase two 4 ch amps for hundreds of $$ less.

That's my prediction.
