Default Rebuilding an alternator?

My alternator is still charging perfectly but is a bit noisy. I confirmed this today when i replaced the belt and carefully felt all bearings. Alternator was ever so slightly rough. Any reason this couldnt be rebuilt rather than replacing?

Rebuilding with an alternator/starter specialist is a great approach and much cheaper than new.

Mine was replaced just before I purchased mine a little over 3 years ago. $1,145 plus $217 labor. If there is a way to rebuild it I'd definitely opt for that.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I saw the prices of new ones from Porsche, as well as Bosch direct units. I couldn't see why, but figured I'd ask to see if I was missing anything.

Look for a post a little while back, it was about a good deal on Amazon and the 997 ( same as 996) alternator. It even includes the pulley. I bought one and I think it was around $200. And it is a new Bosch unit not rebuilt one. Plus a little more power from it too.
Might be worth checking out as an option.

That was the 150amp unit right? Yes, I saw that and would be my second option to a rebuild (or if the rebuild didn't work out)

Don't buy a Chinese eBay version. Keep your factory alternator and have it rebuilt. I've got an excellent shop nearby that did mine for $110. Those aren't rare, just look for an alternator and starter specialist.

I replaced my alternator a couple years ago, Bought a re-manufactured from Advance Auto, was $159 with lifetime replacement. compared the 2 and it was identical to the one I removed.

Identical ? Sure the outside case - but what about the bearings , diodes etc.

I went with San Jose starter and alternator (I'm sure there are local shops like that in many cities) who rebuilt with German parts for me ... ~$200 .... Perfect

Default Also while you are in there

When you are removing the alternator - good time to replace the plastic coolant tee and oil filler hose if those are old and brittle ...

I actually ordered the Amazon 150A alternator and just received it yesterday.

Looks great and I can't wait to install it. I'll let you all know how it turns out once I've done so.

Even with taxes it was less than $300 and Amazon got it to me in a couple of days. Brand new and without a core charge.

Now go have your old one rebuilt and save it for a rainy day!

Replace the alternator-starter y-cable while you're in there. If it has failed yet, it will. Promise.
