"How do you guys produce such an awesome finish?"
"What's the secret sauce to BumperPlugs incredible paint work?"
We get a lot of questions. Over 17 years of refining, testing, trying, and re-trying, we've perfected methods to bond automotive finishes to plastics and rubber in ways no one else can or will. It's a time-consuming, meticulous process (thanks to our superstar pro painter who gives it his all every day and night!). Two examples below.
First, the standard Boxster/911 ('98-'05) black pebble-textured bumperettes on the back end, showing the texture, how they look normally, and how they look from our magic.
Second, cheesy rubberized coating over plastic on most interior bits (you will find this on nearly every high line import - Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Porsche, etc). After a few years, the coating splits, cracks and peels. We have to chemically treat this material, and it goes through many stages of hand work before we can begin crafting a bonded finish for the paints.

Why can't the leather ones be done? It's just a super thin layer of leather that's glued on there. I took it off a piece in mine and scrubbed it down and it looks perfectly fine.

Also the leather is in excellent condition so there is no reason to mess with it.
And most importantly, she would kick the crap out of me if I did something like that to her car

What's left behind is a mess. Yes, it could likely be brought to some usable level before we paint, but we do tons of stuff to the existing plastic now. Add the labor to do all the steps needed, and it's truly not worth it. Don't think we haven't played with that before. Mostly on smaller parts like seatbelt outlets. Messy ordeal. Not saying it can't be done. But we won't touch it for our process.

I noticed on your site it says something to the effect that you'll only accept MY2000 and later consoles? Can you elaborate? I've got a '99 - Thx

Porsche made a change to that material with the '00 model year. The earlier plastics are a grainy grayish finish. Over the years we've experimented with this material, and it is not usable. The paint process fails and the bonding will not hold the same on this material vs the material used from '00 forward.
But we do offer options to replace your console using a newer updated one, painted...there's an additional parts charge involved since no usable core is being returned.

Thanks.
