I was wandering, how helpful PSM is on a track, especially for a first timer (question obviously for those who run with it)

I think its very helpful. It won't intrude on your DE if you are smooth and don't upset the car. If you take a bad line or some hurky jerky move that upsets the balance of the car you will feel kick in. The less it kicks in the smoother you get.

If you are going more than once, keep an eye on your rear brake pads. If they start wearing pretty quickly you know you are causing the PSM to work too hard.
