Question tiptronic auto trans fluid Red Line or Royal Purple experience

HI !
I am interested in hearing from people that have experience using Red Line D4 ATF or Royal Purple Max ATF in the '02 or later 996 tiptronic transmissions. How long have you used it? When did you first put it in (at how many miles)? Any differences in shift characteristics? I am thinking about using it. Thanks for your help !!

I have a 2002 tip. Changed the trans fluid and filter myself. I went with Porsche. It's just too damn important. Those other products might be just fine or might be a really bad idea. You might save less than $20 on a maintenance procedure that you probably will not perform again for 3-5 years. Stick with Porsche.

Default that was my plan

Thanks for you input.
That was my plan.
But when my indy went to buy the fluid, Porsche would only sell them a large quantity (20 liters, I believe) and it was $400 or $500.
So, I am exploring other options.
Additionally, I "heard" that the shifts will be a little more solid with the Royal Purple (I would like that) .... but, I gotta tell you, I really agree with you on this.
That is why I wanted some more opinions.

You can either get the fluid from Porsche, Mercedes or Chrysler.
They are all same transmission, made by Mercedes (722.6).

I think my mechanic used ATF 3353.
Pelican sells porsche ATF 3353 for $45.25.

What you want is Titan ATF 3353 - 4 liters costs $38 from Pelican Parts. You might need anywhere from 6 - 10 liters. Are you just doing a drain & fill or changing out the filter. There is a very special procedure for refill on a 2002, I hope the mechanic is a Porsche specialist and understands what they are doing. I have the exact factory instructions if you want them.

Now we are talking, THANK YOU to both of you.
Very helpful.
So that Titan fluid meets the Porsche fluid specification, so you consider it as good as Porsche fluid?
I am doing a filter change too, and I was aware of the special procedure, but I would love to see it in black and while, so I'll PM you, ejdoherty911, with my email address.
Thanks again.

Here is compatible fluid from Porsche.
I hav fuchs titan on my transmission for 3 years and couple DE. It works fine..

Here what My indy used to adjust the fluid level after ATF change (from another rennlist post):

Yes, according to the manual, make sure the car is level on a lift or ground.

Car must be running in PARK.

To do the check properly, you have to have the porsche tester II to find out tranny temp; you need 30 -45 degrees CELCIUS (or check tranny temp through A/C display; on how to do this is on a different thread somewhere on the forum).

Open plug at back of tranny underneath pan. If fluid runs out, too much fluid, if fluid does not run out, it may possibly need filling.

If you fill, make sure to run through all gears (1-5, R using buttons on wheel) and recheck.

You have to plug up before 45 degrees CELCIUS to be accurate. If temp is too high, fluid will be expanded giving false overfill situation. Turn engine off and wait a little while untill temp is back in range before reopening plug.

If fluid temp too low, will give a false underfill situation.

Yes, Titan ATF 3353 is made by FUCHS the OEM supplier to Porsche. It is the exact same product supplied to Porsche they slap their name on and charge $6.25 more.

I personally use redline D6. Cannot feel any difference in shift....seems same as oem fluid.
Change interval is anywhere between 30-50k miles. If you're stock I don't think you need to change it that often but I run more torque/hard so more frequent. The 3rd gear clutch packs are the weak link in this tranny

FWIW, my indy mechanic used a Redline brand ATF. They work on many Porsches and other German makes and seemed confident that the fluid was "better" than OEM.
I couldn't tell any substantial difference after the fluid change. Perhaps a more accurate, timely shift, but it is possible that could be due more to a clean trans filter than the fluid.

Thank you laphan, geetee, and Spokayman for the additional information.
I've decided to go with the Titan or Fuchs fluid.

geetee, by the way, Redline recommended their D4 ATF for my trans, not D6.
Is your car an '02 or later 996 tiptronic?
