Default Stongard/3M Shield? Yes or No? Price?

Should I get it done? The installer I spoke to cuts it himself and was referred by the dealer. He said that he does not do the bumper/plastic parts because it does not hold well.

What should I get done, other than the hood (18inch strip)?

Some have advised me NOT to do it.

Car is Arctic Silver C2

Thanks

Mine holds to the bumper/plastic parts perfectly fine.

Also, I forgot to ask, how much are people paying for this? Is it needed on the bumpers (given they are plastic anyway?) What do you do when waxing the car if you have Stongard?

I paid $600 last year for an installer to come to the house with pre-cut 3M vinyl. He did the mirrors; part way up the trunklid complete front bumper; the base of the gas lid opening; each edge of the rocker panel behind all 4 tires; also from a strip on each side beginning at the headlights. I watched him install it. It was like watching an artist at work the way he maneuvered the film around with his mix of water and alcohol. It sticks to the bumper quite well and I believe it's well worth the money! If he tells you the material doesn't stick to poly, then I wouldn't use him 'cause IMHO he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Lower trunk lid, front bumper, mirrors, and above headlights. Total bill was a bit less than $500. Worth it for peace of mind IMO. No problems with plastic parts here... on the Pcar or the other two vehicles they did for me.

Installation's tough on black paint (or any dark non-metallic color for that matter) - adhesive marks show through on my car. Probably works ok with arctic silver though.

If the adhesive marks show, it hasn't been done correctly.

The dealer needs to find a new installer to recommend.

The difficult cars to do (bumpers) are the Cayenne, TT and GT2/3, and when done properly there are no problems period. It takes about 1 full day to any one of these properly, so price accordingly.

I have a black C4 Cab. Had the front of the car (every thing including bumper and headlights) done, plus mirrors and a strip on the door edge. No problems at all. The film sticks very well on plactic and metal alike, no glue is showing.
IMO the guy you spoke with doesn't know how to do it right. The bumper is the hardest part to do, so either he is lacking experience or motivation. Do not try to find out which. Go somewhere else.

As to "Is it worth it?", H*LL YES! And you wax it just like you would wax you paint.

Here's how difficult Stonegard is to spot. This is edge of trunklid from about 2 feet away!

I couldn't imagine not having the Stonguard. It is great, and sticks just fine to the bumper on my C4S.

I also have it on the hood, part of the front fenders, mirrors, below gas tank, and one the forward facing part of the rear fenders (ala the 993).

winovin,

ah.. if the guy doesn't do bumper plastic parts, where does he put the film? just the hood and behind the tires??? i suggest you look for a real pro.

i spoke with colm and kirby. my car is done by the same installer. it's nearly invisible, i mean it! it cost me $850 for bumper, head light, hood, frong fenders and mirrors. two pro's on my car for 6 hours. it took that long b/c it was tough, not b/c they didnt' know what they were doing. kirby and i were there most of the time with the installer, and i would have paid them more if they asked. the key is in the installer. and quite frankly, if someone does it alone without a helper, they are either lying or never done it. you litterally need 4 hands. and if anyone can do it in less than 5 hours, i would pay top dollar just to watch!

Mooty,

Thanks - you are right - he just does the hood and fenders. I am now looking for an installer in either the midwest or DC/NYC area - but they are tough to find!

If anyone has ideas, let me know. I am leaning towards StonGard at the moment.

Hey winovin

A Clear bra would look great on your Artic Silver or should I say it'll look invisible. The lighter the car the better the result...except for a pure white car I think.

Get it done, it's one of the best things you can get for your car.

I've added updated install pictures to hobbystage...
