996 Turbo with 100k Miles
Hi All,
I am new here. I am looking to buy a 996 turbo. There are two cars for sale here, one with 80k miles for $33000 and one with 117k miles for $30000. I wanted to find out if it makes sense to buy these cars with such high miles. I am going to look over the service records and have a PPI done. But do you think these high mileage cars can be reliable enough?
Thanks a ton!

Where are you located?
And there are many cases of 200,000+ mile 996TTs, and one well documented 450,000 mile 996TT. It won't be the engine that will disintegrate. You'll be dealing with the other parts of the car (suspension, bearings, AC, alternator, etc). IMHO, time can be almost as hard on that stuff as mileage. I think there is folly in paying a premium for a low-mileage 15 year old car and expecting it to be trouble free.

The engine will be fine, it's everything else with an old car you have to be ready for.
I'm $4k deep in maintenance and only 4 months into ownership of my first Porsche...small problems but the bills add up quickly

Thanks guys! How much do you think is a fair price for a 911TT with a 120k Miles? Should I try and get it down to 25000?
Kcattorney, I live in Maryland.
Vdubjetta02, which Porsche do you have? How did you end up paying 4000? What were the maintenance items?

BTW, welcome to Rennlist!
Well, there is a floor on any good condition 996tt, regardless of miles. With a clean title, I don't think I've ever seen one sell for less than $28,000. There is a thread on the 996tt forum now where a guy is asking price opinions for his 113k mile 996tt as he's thinking of selling. Low side was $30,000. High side was $38,000. Consensus was about $33,000.
The 996tt's I've seen sell in the $25,000 have all had salvage titles.

I think there is still a 996tt coupe at Spotrs Trend Auto Sales in Van Nuys CA with 100k and asking $33k...looks pretty nice. You can go to their web site and look at a lot of pictures. Since it has the Mezger engine that will be almost bullet proof, but as other said, miles and years add up to dollars in old Porsches.

your planning on spending 30k, ( a lot of money for an almost 15 year old USED car). Why not save a little more so you pick a car based on personal pref not low entry point.
With 30k you could get a very nice na 996. Also consider having a maintenance budget set aside of at least 5k. If your dead set on a high mileage car there is a strong possibility that it will require a handful of fixes that could add up quickly.

100k on a 996 Turbo IMO is nicely broken in. There's a guy in Arizona that has a 2003 996 Turbo with over 500k miles. I believe he had a motor rebuild at the 470k mark. I wouldn't hesitate about buying one with that many miles just so long as the miles are reflected in the asking price.

If you plan on spending $30k for the car then you best have another $10k in the bank for all the maintenance and parts replacement. Your first step is to find the car, then get an independent PPI (should be between $300 and $500). I would expect tires, brakes and suspension on the event horizon. I would also budget for a 90k Major Service ~$4500. You want a fresh baseline on all your fluids, belts and filters. I was looking for a 996TT Cab (04/25) in the $35k range so I was where you are now last December and ended up in an 04 C4S Cab. You should check out the 996TT forum.

The only reason I want to get the tt instead of the na is the solid engine. I don't want to deal with the ims problems of the na. And it's a much more fun car and a better investment.
I am pretty handy and I can do minor maintenance items myself.

I get what you are saying, but the TT has it's own issues. Rear wing lift rams failing - get the Rennkit Electric Ram replacement kit, turbo rebuilds, etc. I was within a day of driving to Atlanta to pick up an 04 TT Cab w/X50at Ellis Porsche after negotiating with them for close to a month, but the PPI changed my mind. Then there was Cleveland, clutch accumulator, complete brakes, etc. And Omaha. As others have written, the search is half the "fun", lol.
