Hello,
I am in the process of sorting out the maintenance on a 996.2 C2 with 70K miles and wanted input on if I should be doing additional maintenance items while installing the following parts and if I would need any special tools outside of the realm for a shadetree mechanic for them:
1) AOS
2) Water pump
3) Spark plugs
4) Lowering springs
5) Headers
6) Short throw shifter
7) Motor mounts

AOS - do this whenever you feel like hating yourself.
Spark plugs (and coil packs) w/ headers - while I'm no fan of aftermarket headers, if you're going to do the headers, do the plugs and coil packs at the same time - removing the mufflers and headers opens up all kinds of room.
Water pump - you can pretty much do this one whenever. Instead of lowering the old pump down and out and installing the new one from below, remove the idler pulley above the water pump and remove and replace from above. You'll thank me for this.
Short-throw shifter - whenever. Once you're good at removing the center console, this turns into a 30-minute job.
Motor mounts - again, a fine standalone project; assuming you don't have a bunch of corrosion on the old ones, this is a quickie.
Depending on how much PM/scheduled maintenance was done by previous owner, fuel filter may be due.

Awesome information.
It looks like the fuel filter is in-tank.
I'm ordering the thermostat, belt, trans mount and coils following inspection. Hopefully I can find a sub $1,000 catback to increase the Flat6 sound.

The best bang for the buck for exhaust is Darin Fister's setup - if you send your old cores, the total cost (unless you go with some of the fancy coatings) is $315. http://fdmotorsports.net/fister-exhaust-996/
I don't know how much extra Fister charges if you elect to keep your unmodified mufflers.
I don't think these are necessarily the BEST mufflers - the Tubis are amazing - but not $1,500 more amazing.
