How do you put it back on?
The battery in my key is just about dead - it won't open or lock remotely anymore. Is this something I can change or will I need to take the key to the dealer and have them change the battery?
It's actually really easy to change the battery just make sure the (as in the picture) you place the battery and green circuit board in the removable top part of the key as if you place it in the holder attached to the actual key it won't close as I learned.
If you think about it these keys aren't really up to date...bmw and merc keys recharge when they are in the ignition and they are not as bulky.

Take it to the dealer if all else failed.

Anyone know the part numbers of replacement key heads (not the electronics inside them)? My keys are all scratched and marred and it would be nice to replace them for brand new ones with a shiny Porsche crest on them. I have a 1999 996.
Thanks,
Mark

Mail your key to me.....
You cannot buy just the black plastic 'shell.' Only the entire key head with the electronics and 'pill' in it. Do not ask how much a new key head co$t$.
But, the keys heads I see on ebay might be good for this. They are worthless unless they have the 24 digit code on the paper tag that goes with that key head - and almost none of them do. If you can get one in excellent condition for $10 you might try to transfer all your electronic stuff to a cheap ebay key.
I have not done this and I'm not going to open my key head again to see if you can make the switch. Jeff
